Anyone replaced their steering wheel?

the leather on my steering wheel resembles a bit of worn out sandpaper towards the top.

whilst it's great for grip it's kinda annoying.

i've got the prado booked in for a service tomorrow and i rang up toyota for an estimate on getting it replaced.

i think my first response to the guy was "your sh!tting me right" when he responded with "i'm not sure exactly for the prado but i quoted for a cruiser a few months back and it was > $2g's!" just about floored me.

that toyodiy site has it listed as around $910 us...

unfreakenbelievable! anyone else got similar figures/found an alternative? i.e. upholsterer and if so what'd that cost?

May be worth looking at the wreckers.

There is a few brand new ones floating around in VIC as they were used in crash tests. The entire interiors survived OK.

Ours is the same, I need to look into it further but a guy I know who does upholstery repairs, said there is a replacement cover for around $250 then he would fit it for me. I will try to find the time to call him for more info.

Just get a new skin laced on by an Auto-Trimmer. No point in binning a whole wheel because the leathers worn. Should cost between $200 & $300. I had an old SAAS woodie covered in leather years ago including some padding underneath, it cost me $125 then.

Swapped the scruffy steering wheel in my 1997 GXL - cost a motza.
... but then I did swap it for the more modern wheel from a 2008 VX D4D - which was attached :wink:

looks like wreckers/upholsterer's are the go. i stuck my head into the spare parts department to get the exact figure and it was $1470 for the wheel... then add on fitting..

will check out a few leather places i think and see how that goes.

how about one of those lambswool jobbies you occasionaly see!

I've been using one of them... i found they stretched and became lose on the wheel, and the sliding around was making the leather underneath worse... i like it though.. but traction on the steering wheel became an issue.

Have seen prado steering wheels on ebay recently - the VX / Grande "woodgrain" numbers.
I can't recall what they were going for.

on a previous car, I had a lace up leather cover and it was fine, mainly because it was had to be stretched to cover the wheel as didn't move at all. I'd be going to see an upholsterer.

I have changed mine. I changed mine since the car is new, so I have a brand new one in black leather sitting in the garage gathering dust........

Mate - I seem to recall in your youth you would have just chucked on a steering wheel cover with those matching (and bloody annoying! ) seatbelt covers!

Perhaps the money you saved on the last 3 services should go towards the wheel ............ :wink:

I gather that the vehicle is out of warranty.

I had mine replaced under warranty a couple of years ago as the leather perished at the top.

No questions asked. But they did not volunteer to do it prior to my asking at service intervals.

yeah... couple of years out of warranty. it was in pretty good nick at the end of the 3 years so i didn't get it replaced!
