can you tell a d4d by the exterior?

Hi guys,
Searching for a d4d prado, is there a way besides seeing the d4d badge on the front quarter panel that you can work out whether it has a d4d engine?

Obviously this is on the exterior only. The reason being I am trawling thru the classifieds and finding a few 2006 models with the d4d advertised as the old model.. and having a 4 speed transmission rather then the 5 speed etc

Even interior wise? Does the d4d have features inside that the older diesel model doesnt have?

Engine number of my 2007 D4D starts with 1KD...... Possibly denotes engine type. Does anyone with an early model know their engine number?

I think it starts with KZ for the non-D4D models.

The prado D4d is fitted with 5speed auto only.

Ok thanks guys...

One thing I note, is that I have come across a few cars advertised as the KZ model with a 4 speed auto, but in reality its the 5 speed auto, KD with the d4d (can tell by the d4d badge and engine shot if there is one).

Some photos are hard to tell, I just wanted to confirm if there are any visual ways to check on the car or in the car to determine whether it is a d4d model...

Here is a prime example:

Advertised as a KZ 4 speed auto. Clearly the pictures state it is a d4d...

For examples sake, if that pic of the d4d badge wasn't there, how would you know from looking at the piccys?

Dont know about photos, but under the hood is the d4d all over the intercooler shroud. same as panels. Option packs are a give away if I am right ? and transmissions and boxes, 6speed manual and 5spd auto. :?

Switched, I would not completely trust any photo of any vehicle for sale.

I'd say wrong photos are quite regularly, misplaced, put in error or done deliberately. i.e. one photo of a std white gxl with or without an alloy bar is an identical match to most prados in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane.....

My suggestion would be if you are going to travel some distance to see one, get the person or place to check under the bonnet for the D4D plastic engine cover over the intercooler.

Not a water tight way to tell, but the D4D GXL's (not sure which model you are after) come with the roof rails fitted.
As I say, not water tight as it's an easy mod to add to your non-D4D GXL Prado.

The D4D was released AFTER the 5 speed auto. When I bought my 2005 petrol in Jan 2005 I knew the D4D was imminent (from UK sites) but it still wasn't due until around June 2005. The 5 speed auto box came out around Oct 04.

The best ways I know of to tell is the badges, roof rails, pop the hood and see the D4D cover on the engine, and the 5 speed auto when it is auto.
I do know when the old diesel was in run out mode they were adding the roof rails to them to make them more appealing, so thats not a given indicator from the outside.

Other than that listen for the rattle...

Hi everyone,

If you have a Sept 06- Dec 06 plated vehicle, you might have one of the very few hybrid, slapped together pieces of crap with a D4D AND a four speed auto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I definately have a D4D ( have had the injectors replaced ) and it definately only has a four speed auto.(Dec 06 build ).........I got it for a really good price, but because I didnt do my homework ops: ops: ops: I did not know that the 07 upgrade had a five speed auto....otherwise would have waited 2 more months

So the D4D / 5 speed auto theory is dead.........
