Don't worry guys, the wife wondered when I had put the number 16 on the bumper as well

Re: Canoe on the roof racks

      G'day guys,
I developed a system to load and transport my 7.4 metre long kayak, that should be adaptable to a tinnie.

It is a bit of work and expense, but has a number of advantages to just using cradles fixed to the roof bars.

The photos show it on my previous prado, but it works just fine on my current 120.

I am not sure whether webshots will let me link the photos directly. If the photo links do not work, either try "adbphotos webshots" on google, or go to

You do not have to use 5 sets of cradles! I had them, the kayak is kevlar and fibreglass, and I was doing some rough roads so I figured overkill was in order!

Two of the real attributes of the system, apart from making the boat a doddle to load and unload, are:
      - the cradles come off the car with the boat, so that you no longer have height problems when driving around town without the boat; and
      - you can simply wheel the boat to the water to launch, without taking that two-tonne of expensive metal anywhere near all that nasty salt water...

A version for the Tinnie would require heavier section aluminium for the main spars of the boat rack, and you might need to use heavier angle on the roof rails as well. That will bring a weight penalty, and you will have to work out for yourself whether the system is viable. For canoes and kayaks it is simply superb.

      cheers, Tony
