  • front shock leaking

    hi all
i just had a service (240k) on my 2003 prado grande
i have a leak on the lhs front shock
i drive 60-80 k a year mostly sealed but a lot of unsealed back roads between mines in the gold fields
so i still want the comfort and handling of originals but the cost of 1 side is around 800-900 dollars
is it ok to change 1 or should both be changed or are there aftermarket ones that will give the same ride?
i dont get offroad very much beach fishing when i can so standard is ok
    thanks

Like brake pads and tyres, shocks should be changed in pairs IMO

I had this exact same issue with my 2004 GXL. Drivers side front shock was leaking, so I used it was an excuse, I mean, an opportunity to convince the wife to upgrade!

But I agree with comments made before, might as well replace both front ones at the same time, and yes, $900 is ridiculous, even for Mr. Toyota!

Next time your driving through the goldfields give me a call and you can have my brand new 2009 stock shocks and struts. Done less that 1,500km. They are in the shed and going to the tip if no-one wants them. (Along with a set of Tough Dog H/duty standard height coils for a 95 series.)

              Re: front shock leaking

I had my car back at one of the Toyo dealers today for a continuation of the ABS issue I'm having. Got dropped at work by one of the apprentices (4th year). Was talking to him in the car and he started on about the cost of the Shocks and said something like $500 each. All up just over $2k.

                Re: front shock leaking

PhilipG is that from the Northam Toyota Dealer? I'd get a quote from them to fix it, and then bring that to a dealer in Perth and challenge them to do better. $900.00 for a single shock replacement is daylight robbery as the guys have said. At that price, you'd be well on your way to replacing your entire suspension gear. I suspect that in Places like Northam the dealer might be of the opinion that you can't exactly go to the next dealer in town, so they see what they can get out of you. Next time you're in Perth I'd drop it at another dealer and see what they say. I've heard good things about Scarborough Toyota but haven't had my own car in there I must admit. I'd steer clear of "large" Toyota on Wanneroo road though. They like "large" bills too.........

                  Re: front shock leaking

The Grande has TEMS, so that is why the shock is so expensive. It has eletronics connector at the top, so you can change the valving of the shock in the centre console.
                  Thanks

                    Hi All,

I just picked up a 2012 Prado GX Diesel. 111000km

Put in up on the hoist before buying and when the suspension is fully extended you can see oil on the shaft of the front shockies.

I told this to the dealer and his guys put it up and said it's normal and only an issue if the oil runs all the way down.

Rides well and doesn't nose dive on braking.

I got 3 months stat warranty and wanted to know if this was an issue I have ground for or if this is truly normal.

                    Any help would be great,

                    Thanks.

I got a stat warranty for 3 months
