  • ROUGH IDLE

    Greetings all,

I have a D4D Auto and have noticed that on cold starts and for about 10-15mins thereafter it idles quite rough (almost chugs) when in drive and stationary only.
It seems to go after warm up. Does anyone else experience this and also foes the idle up switch help?

    Thanks in advance

    Mick

Hmmm... not what I'd call very cold.. not cold enough for a 10-15min warm up anyway.

What's your dealer got to say about it?

          Re: ROUGH IDLE

I'm on the sunshine coast ,temps in the mid teens of a morning and my work Prado which is a 07 D4D GX has the rough idle problem. I use the idle up but even after the revs dropped I have the same thing. It always goes after 10mins driving but it's abit concerning having the whole dash juttering up and down when stopped at the first set of red lights. I've done 103000kms about 1000km a week with no long term problems.

            Re: ROUGH IDLE

The first thing I think of for unusually rough-idle is engine mounts. Though, if your engine mounts have failed, I would not expect the rough-idle to smooth out after 10 minutes. It will be interesting to hear what Toyota have to say.

It's as though something is out of balance I did note if you drop it into Neutral and the engine is allowed to run freely the roughness stops. It's only when the transmission is in D and the engine is at idle it happens.

I have tried "Idle Up", nothing happens!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought it was supposed to increase idle revs. I assume they are standard on GXL Auto D4D, nothing in hand book.

"Idle Up" is like an automatic choke. It increases the revs by about 600 or 700rpm, but only:

My 08 D4D Auto does the same thing feels like the car is trying to accelarate while you have your foot on the brake.
Due for service this week will ask dealer about and post his answer.

I had this same problem 3 weeks ago so took it to the dealer and they changed the engine mounts. Since then, I have had no problems at all, even on colder mornings.

                        Re: ROUGH IDLE

AHA! I was wondering if this issue was going to resurface now that winter has come around again. Seems it has.

Last winter we had a huge discussion relating to rough running D4D's on cold mornings. Anyone with a D4D should now head to the Diesel engine forum and have a read of the "Diesel Rattle in D4D Prado" thread. Grab a coffee because there's a lot of reading there.

My D4D certainly ran rough last winter on cold mornings too. Toyota said at the time that this was "normal", and that all D4D engined vehicles experienced this from cold starts as part of normal operation. Toyota told me that no damage was occurring from this happening. About as far as we got to getting an answer was that the fuel mix was incorrect for the cold conditions, until the engine warmed up. Getting confirmation on this from Toyota though never happened, as far as I know. So don't treat the above as gospel.

There was also another issue with faulty injectors. Which will also cause the D4D to run rough (as you'd expect). From what I can see so far, the cold start, and faulty injectors are 2 separate issues. Although both scenarios result in a rough running engine. Toyota did acknowledge the faulty injector issue but it seems the issue is kept well and truly under the carpet. I now believe I simply had the cold start issue as all through summer my D4D has been flawless. What most of us ended up doing was driving very easily for the first 10 mins or so keeping engine revs as low as possible, when the rough running occurred.

I believe there was also some speculation that the use of the Idle up button only compounded the incorrect fuel mix issue. Once again, no concrete evidence for this. For the record, the use of the idle up button didn't seem to change the rough running either way for me.

Interesting the comments about the engine mounts. Seems we can now add that to the possible list of causes.

                          Re: ROUGH IDLE

Yup, I live in Perth aswell, only on unusually cold mornings the idle up button will activate once pressed, as soon as you put into the gear it drops out.
Let it idle for a minute and then I usually disengage it or when it does it on its own, then depress the button. 8)
I heard a scary rattle the other morning.... Mmmm help! then again I am prone to needless worry haha, may be just me

I spoke to Dealer yesterday, they want it over night so they can do a "stone cold" start on it to see if it happens. He did state that there could be an issue with them. One was an engine mount issue and the other was a possible software upgrade.mmmmmmmmmmm I will keep you posted.

Yeah the software upgrade sounds like the ECU reflash. Read the diesel engine forum for people's experiences with it. Let us know how you get on though.
