  • Dust behind instrument panel glass ?

Hi guys. We've just been on an extended trip through Outback NT, QLD and NSW in our 08 D4-D Prado GXL ( great trip BTW, I must put up a report one day )

Anyway, a layer of fine of dust has deposited itself on the rear side of the instrument panel perspex. Not all over it, just in patches
It's quite annoying because when the sun shines on the instrument panel, the dust obscures the dials quite a bit.

Should I ask for it to be fixed/cleaned under warranty ?

How hard is it to take off the perspex and clean behind it myself ? I did a search found another thread on a similar subject ( sand in instrument panel ) but there was no detailed description on how to remove the perspex on a 120 Series.

Personally as it's under warranty, I'm loath to touch it, having pulled apart an older Hilux one years ago and cracking the perspex.
    Cheers, Wayne

Belay that, I did a bit more searching and found this thread

    viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3535&hilit=+instrument

from this it looks like removing the instrument cluster is not difficult.
it also seems the perspex cover is held on only by a couple of screws at the top of the cluster.
    Cheers, Wayne

Has anyone removed the plastic cover yet? I have the same problem but I do not want to screw up the operation :P

I haven't got round to it yet.
It's not exactly a show stopper - just annoying.

I did have a quick look - there's two plastic plugs at the top of the black shroud bit that are easy to take out. That's as far as I got.
Looks like to release the bottom of that black plastic shroud you need to remove the panel around the driver's knees first.

From what I could see it looks like the clear perpsex is only held on by two screw at the top and lugs at the bottom - not glued or anything.

But I'd like to hear from somoene that's done it.

The other thing I was going to try is get the dealer to clean it under warranty - whtdya reckon on my chances ? :?
        Cheers, Wayne

Under Warranty? My thoughts are not good. Unless there's been some sort of manufacturing defect such as a faulty seal or cracked plastic cover etc. I'm not aware that Toyota guarantee's that dust will absolutely not get into the cab space, or instrument panels. I suppose you could argue the fact that if dust can get in there through fair use of the vehicle and obscure critical information, that is in itself a manufacturing defect. Make sure to tell them though that the dust got in when you were traveling along recognized gazetted roads and not along a 4WD track that Toyota might argue voids warranty because you took the vehicle where it wasn't supposed to be. If it is something common to all the Prado's though and not a breakage / fault with yours I'm not sure what Toyota will do. My thoughts are they'll ask you to wear the cost of cleaning as it is all part of owning and operating your Prado. If they do find a missing rubber grommet etc then yeah, I'd expect they'd clean the instrument panel and put in the grommet under warranty. When it comes to Toyota and claims though, I admit to being extremely cynical.

They'll have no scruples about charging you some impossible amount to clean it though.

Let us know how you get along. I am interested in cleaning this up from the inside.

            Cheers.

                Hi Jack,

So did you only have to remove the two top screws then as ozwapet2 mentioned?

                Cheers.

I think he was asking what holds the clear plastic window on to the instrument panel itself i.e. do you need to remove the whole cluster or can you just take off the clear plastic with it in situ.

Having removed the entire center stack to change the Stereo, I am now more comfortable with working on the car, I will see if removing those tow screws will remove the plastic cover and report back in due course

                          Watching this with interest.
                          I have dust there too.
Arrived home today after 3 months involving Plenty, Tanami, Gibb River Road.
I'm sure the Prado weighs many kilos more than before, having ingested a gutful of dust, despite filters etc.
Old 90 series didnt get nearly so dusty.
Saw a new Pajero with even more dust inside.
I'm hoping the removal of the instrument panel cover is just a simple removal of the 2 screws and pulling out.
                          Cheers
