  • Disabling traction control on the Prado

Found this video on Youtube and I believe this will also work with the Prado as the FJ cruiser has the same setup

Apparently it can be an issue in soft sand.

Re: Disabling traction control on the Prado

I can guarantee it is a bitch in soft sand.

The disabling of the plug should stop the brakes being applied, but I think it also disables throttle as well? I have had a couple times it has seemingly retrded the engine in slides (Handbrake turns) and loses power trying to come out of it.

So who is gonna be first to try it?

Had a strange experience with the TC in soft sand whilst at Fraser. Was driving up the beach towards Waddy Point and came off the hard and onto the well churned soft. I hadn't engaged the centre diff lock and I didn't want to stop or slow down to engage it. Anyway we battled on,heaps of revs when suddenly at the worst moment the revs dropped way down with the resultant zero power. Looked like we were gonna need snatching. The old girl locked up various wheels and we crawled out. Thought we'd broken something.

remove fuse 55 under the bonnet( passenger side) and your truck will be so much better in soft sand, I do it all the time, just ignore the warning lights on the dash

                Sorry
if you have a manual 55 is numbered if not its the 4th fuse down on the left hand side of the fuse box assuming you are looking down over the passenger side, otherwise a quicker way is disconnect the wiring plug on the brake reservoir, theres only one so its easy to find

Re: Disabling traction control on the Prado

not exactly sure what your question is,but from my point of view disabling your traction control is the only way to go in deep sand and steep dunes, with it disabled you have throttle when you need it and the computer has no say in the matter..but the best advice on sand is tyre pressure.. there are so many different opinions on this but in really really soft sand I have had my tyres down as low as 10psi with no probs..but try at 15 to 18 and see how it affects YOUR vehicle

Re: Disabling traction control on the Prado

Cheers Stevo, i'll have a look for the wiring plug on the brake reservoir your talking about tomorrow. I gather i'll know if it's right if traction light comes up on the dash? Thanks for the tyre pressure info also. I normally run 15psi, but have gone down to 13psi before. Be a bugger changing a flat in the sand? prob should carry a block of wood.

Re: Disabling traction control on the Prado

                        Hi Guys,

I believe the issue with the engine being retarded when going into soft sand without the centre diff locked is actually related to the stability control. In the manual it states that without the centre diff engaged SC (Stability control) and TC (traction control) are engaged. However as soon as the centre diff is engaged the SC is deactivated but the TC is still active.

I am yet to try out the TC in soft sand but hope to very soon. If you look on Youtube at some people that have experimented with TC off and on in sand you will see that it is more of a useful tool than a hinderance.

                        Regards

Hi Doug, don't think my 08 GXL has SC (Stability control). Was just looking at quickest whay to disconect Traction control? Pull plug off brake reservoir today but no lights come? maybe lights only come on when wheels are spinning and plug disconnected?

Re: Disabling traction control on the Prado

I was initially worried about driving on soft sand with traction control after seeing comments about people disabling it, but I haven't had a problem myself. Just need to get your tyre pressures set correctly.

My traction control annoyingly kicks in when driving up really steep hills even with the rear diff lock engaged. As soon as a front wheel let’s go slightly and part spins the traction control kicks in & stops me. Frickin annoying. Just an example of technology aids being a real hindrance when off-roading. I’m keen to give this a go.
