  • Camper & Prado rear door...clearance question..

    Couldn't find this covered elsewhere...

Obviously we know the rear door swings out quite wide and could be an issue for camper trailers. Some of you would've bought your camper with a specifically long draw bar for this reason but for those who didn't/bought a cheap one and didn't have the option, what did you do about clearance when modding?

I have a very basic camper here which I need to mod quite dramatically over the years to get it how I want. One of the first mods I'd like to do is a stone protector and toolbox/fridge mount etc on the front. At the moment I can open the door completely but if I want to do this, there's no way it will open. What's the best option? I'm on myswag but haven't found anyone dealing with the problem.

I thought of a swing up stone screen/guard and imagine this would be VERY custom and I couldn't put a box on the front or I could extend the draw bar (no idea if I can do this whilst keeping it strong enough/legal etc). Any other ideas out there?
    Cheers - Phil Taylor

A removable stoneguard maybe ? something that is only two nuts to undo?
I think I remember seeing one on myswag.org regarding a removable stoneguard for your very reasons.
Will have to look for it 8)

Re: Camper & Prado rear door...clearance question..

My door hits the dual 9kg gas bottles unless I jack-knife it a bit upon parking. Initially thought I might change the gas bottles to 4.5's or get a longer hitch tongue but not being able to fully open the door hasn't really bothered me and I have my fridge on the right!(and so haven't done anything about it!). It does cause trouble on windy days but I just get one of the kids to hold it so it doesn't swing open and hit the bottles.

There's a webpage with pictures of lots of different stone-deflectors somewhere, there might be a quick fit one amongst them. I rely on my super mud flap and for Mereenie Loop and GRR I fitted a home-made shade cloth under-skirt (streched from car to camper under drawbar affixed with shock cord) but had some problems with it as my design allowed it to firstly drag on the ground, so we changed how we affixed it, only to burn a hole in it with the exhaust! It did seem to work as rocks were being pelted out sideways but not much was hitting the camper and nothing rebounding into the car.

      Nige.

Ok, that's a start - got me thinking of other ways to do it at least - I'll have a bit more of a hunt round myswag.

I have found that the door fouls the override brake lever on my boat trailer. May have to cut the lever short to allow door to clear.

Theres also quite a few ideas for this on the Camper Trailers web page....

            http://www.campertrailers.org

These are listed under the "TECH TIPS" area of the website

or the link to the Trailer mod
