    G'day
What's involved in removing the rear seats , not the 3rd row the normal rear seats in a 09 GXL ?
Any issues I should look out for ?

    Cheers

Do you mean the second row of seats? From memory there is about 6 bolts on the 40 side and a few more on the other (I think). Reasonably easy to remove. The only problem I had was the front axel bracket. I played around with this when the seat was out and it wouldn't click back into the correct position. From memory I had to bolt that one in first and then push the seat back down which forced it with a little bit of extra leverage into the right spot.

Yes, my name is Nick. the 40 is in reference to the 60/40 split of the middle row of seats. The 40 side is the passenger side.

          Re: rear seats

It's easy, a 30 min job. The trickiest part is taking off the plastic covers over the brackets.

Then just undo the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Put the bolts back in the holes after you remove the seats so you don't lose them, and to stop dust coming in.
Careful when taking the seats out as the brackets have sharp edges and may scratch your doors.
The larger one is also quite heavy.

I actually made up a false floor for this area - pretty easy to do..

Here's the brackets after you take off the plastic covers - just remove the bolts.

The only problem with taking the back seat out is that the cargo tends to push up against the front seats, preventing them from being adjusted.

I made up a bit of a frame out of some aluminium square tube and 3mm plywood I had lying around ( 6mm would be better ).
Note this uses the original seat mounting holes ( longer bolts needed of course )

Then put a bit of 3mm craftwood over it

Then put a bit of marine carpet offcut over that

This gives you a nice flat area for storing your soft, bulky items. (you should only put soft, light cargo like blankets or sleeping bags etc. in this area - anything heavy needs to go behind a proper cargo barrier )
Also gives you somewhere for drink bottles.

This whole thing can be taken out and the normal seats back in within half an hour.

Beware though I think there are some laws against removing the back seat in some states. ( QLD )
          Cheers, Wayne

Jee thanks for the very informative reply as that's exactly what I want to do . Going to the Simpson in Sept with some mates , 4 on bikes and 6 cars. I've been told not to take the camper so I need the extra storage space .
Thanks mate , let me know your name ?

            Cheers

I've asked a mechanic at Toyota, according to him it's not possible to remove the seats.
I assume there is a trick but can't figure what it is.
                Please help.

                      Done !
Pull the front plastic bottom up, then "break" it in two parts (front/rear).
Undo the four bolts (I removed the left seat only).
                      And... voila !
I will give this mechanic a roasting !!!
