  • Diesel versus petrol "calculus"

    Hi all,
I'm not sure as to the EXTRA cost that the D4D is,, compared to the V6 Petrol,,,, when purchasing new...
But as I am about to become a new first time Prado owner, I was interested in the fuel economy difference between the 2 engines.

So, as a matter of interest , I did a series of mathematical calculus..
After taking into account the stated Toyota Fuel consumption of the 2 Engines,,, the average price of petrol and diesel on the same day, and ( YES ) allowing for the dearer price of diesel.
It comes as a surprise that for every 100 litres of ( fuel ) used that the diesel will travel approximately 315 KLMS or 195 Miles further than the petrol version...
Which is a huge saving in fuel costs
My calculus was done in 3 different computations, and the end results IN ALL 3 was within reasonable tolerance.

My Calc's have been checked ( by someone else ) and appear to be correct
So it would seem that the diesel is the way to go...

    Please don't shoot the messenger

Then chuck the extra service costs in and you will get a shock.. Its been done before, a search will bring out the original thread..

Hasn't this been done to death on here?.... very boring... no winners in this argument... buy the one you want and live with it.

FY 08/09 my D4D purchased 30/6/08 used $1,800 less fuel from FY 07/08 using petrol 05 model with very similar kilometers. But it's the amazing range that sells me - I get real close to 2,000km per tank averaging low 9s per 100km.

              Re: Diesel versus petrol "calculus"

Heh yeah, this topic has been well and truly discussed. Always good to get another take on it though. Don't hesitate to dig up the old thread(s) and add more to it.

There are pro's and con's either way. When diesel was around $2.00 a litre there were many diesel owners, including myself, questioning the merits of buying another diesel if fuel prices were going to be that high. Diesel may well be more efficient but more expensive to run, negating any efficiency benefits cost wise. I note with some trepidation right now that diesel prices are again creeping up disproportionally to petrol prices. You can always go the gas route with petrol engines. Not so with Diesel. Sure, you can go gas injection with diesel engines but to do that properly the cost is prohibitive.

Added to that, people will always defend the choice they made, just like I say that Diesel is the way to go! 8) But then...I have diesel for freaking blood.....
