  • New Rig: Out With The Old In With The New

Well, I've just replaced my rig. My 2003 GX manual Turbo Diesel has just been replaced by a late 2006 GXL 5 speed auto D4D. While the obvious attractions of the D4D, newer model etc. have beckoned for a little while the primary motivation for change was the auto. Sadly, my left knee is not what it used to be (I blame too many years of indoor cricket!) and I found myself wincing every time I depressed the clutch to change gears in the old girl. Both my Wife & I got increasingly alarmed at the loud & painful "crack" emanating from my knee (usually followed by a loud curse from me!). While for many years a staunch manual man, my cars have increasingly been autos over the last few years, except for "play" vehicles such as the GX Prado and the odd classic Jag (a whole heap of other stories there!). Seems my "manual" days were increasingly numbered & thought it time to replace the manual Prado & take the opportunity to update as well. The high mileage on the GX was also a bit worrying (238,000 kms!). Mind you, it did show me just how great a rig a Prado can be even with such high mileage.

So I did some research into availability, current values etc. I have to tell you that availability is quite scarce in my neck of the woods (regional Queensland) and even on the popular auto trader websites, one isn't overly spoiled for choice even further afield! I did manage to check out a couple of 2004 to 2006 rigs (tidy but often high mileage & over-priced in my opinion) but found D4D models to be scarce as hens teeth (people are hanging onto them!) & hellishly dear when you can find them. Without too much hope, I contacted a major Toyota dealer in Brisbane who I knew to have an honest, helpful reputation and ran into some good luck. While they haven't been getting many in, just that morning a private D4D owner had traded his rig on a new Prado. The salesman described it as an honest family vehicle with low mileage (66,000 kms) in excellent condition. So after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing on likely change over (trading my GX), swapping photos, reassurances of the honest condition of the D4D, my Wife & I drove the 700 kms to Brisbane and did the deal!

One of the early sticking points for me in considering the deal was the vehicle colour: nearly all of our vehicles over the years have been light in colour, this was DARK METALLIC GREY (I think Toyota call it Charcoal Grey). However, as stated choice wasn't great and the strong points of the vehicle (including a good deal on change-over price) couldn't be ignored. So here I am, the very happy (& proud to be "grey"!) owner of a 2006 GXL 5 speed auto D4D

It looks almost like a new car & certainly drove like one all the 700 kms back home. It's a stock standard rig with the Toyota tow bar & window tint the only options or additions. My immediate plans are to put on a bull bar (probably ARB Deluxe) & spotlights, which will likely quickly lead to a suspension upgrade (was planning to do that to the GX). So I guess you're likely to see a new rig build-up thread pretty soon!

    Here's a quick pic.

    Sunday.

G'day Spoony. When agonising over the deal (& colour), I checked out photos of your rig in various posts on this forum (I remembered you & the grey rig). I now have to agree: grey is good! It helps that my Customline camper trailer is a dark grey-ish colour too, I'll post photos when rigged up.

            Cheers,

How do you find the performance over the 1KZ manual? Does the auto respond jsut aswell as the manual did with the older donk?

The Mrs loves your colour choice too!!

                Sunday,

Great looking rig, now I know what you were talking about a couple of weeks ago when you said you had hit a stumbling block. Hope you are flying now

                Look forward to the build-up.

Hey Mitch, Are you asking cause your thinking what I think your thinking??? you thinking of trading soon??

Actually, it would be good to get the opinion of a staunch Manual man going from his beloved style of shifting to the automatic gear shifting decided on by funny named Japanese engineers..
I am also a staunch manual man. Linda is a staunch manual female, so we are the staunch manual family..
Interested to here your comments on that now..

I thought the "old donk" & manual combination was no slouch, despite what I'd heard from old reviews etc. Mind you, the D4D with 5 speed auto is...well let's just say:

                        Hi Jeff,

Pam and I had always been manual drivers until the Prado and although I still love driving my work car the auto in the Prado is just so easy to drive (although it is a Petrol model) We had never owned a 4wd before so I will be very interested in Sundays opinion as well.

Re: New Rig: Out With The Old In With The New

Just to expand a little more on my driving impressions upon upgrading from a 2003 Tdiesel manual to the 2006 Tdiesel D4D 5 speed auto:

Up till recently, every time I heard a diesel automatic 4WD drive past I've always thought: "That's just not right..." They always sounded like they were never extracting the full range of power & torque from whatever vehicle it happened to be wheezing by (Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi etc.). So, when it came to diesel 4WDs it's always been manuals for me...until my recent epipheny brought on by a bad case of "kneesles" (i.e. crook knees).

I drove a few pre D4D auto diesel Prados & thought: hhmm, not bad: the 4 speed auto seems to do ok. When I finally got to drive the next door neighbours D4D 5 speed auto, I knew I was hooked & I now own one!

The motor auto box combination is a beauty. With normal driving it always seems to be in the "right" gear & with only a little prompting of the loud pedal, will change down instantly to really make the most of the power & torque on hand. It really is that good. It also excells at towing: smooth as silk, no driveline snatch or stressed clutches! And while I haven't yet driven mine in the sand or soft stuff, I reckon it'll be in its element. The economy is also excellent, no real difference to the manual from stats I've seen. Knee or no knee: I wouldn't go back to a manual Prado.

                          Cheers,

Welcome Sunday to the ranks of the Grey Autos.

Before we went auto we read a great deal about how they went in all conditions and we decided that it was the way to go. We have done extensive touring now and we feel that it is the only way to go for ease of use and control in all conditions. We got a good deal on a Charcoal Grey and had concerns about the dark colour but we have had no difficulties with heat etc and love the colour now. It is rich and classy and looks great when the morning sun hits it and the blue flecks come out. I remain a 3.0td owner, however, and I am in no rush to upgrade due to the gear on board and the cost of exchange.

                              Happy travelling.
