  • Shudder under brakes.....

I have done a few searches on this -my problem (lucky me) is a bit different to all posted, i should probably go under suspension but i am thinking it may be disk rotors?
Car has done 55k, has 6month old BFG all terrains - at 110kmh has a slight vibration through the steering wheel (wheels need balancing) if i hit the brakes the wheel shudders, the harder your brake the harder the shudder -obviously the wheel balance wont be helping but it feels more like the rotors need machining? (perhaps?) just would have thought 57k is a bit soon to be doing that?
Does it at lower speeds but no where near as bad....
I am going to crawl under it tonight with a tyre lever to check to see if anything is loose/worn -just thought i would throw it out here first to see if anyone else had exerienced this?
    cheers

    Hi Clint330ci,

Had the same problem comming back down the coast in October (towing the Camper) put it in to my dealer for the 90k service when we got back...... machined all 4 disks and problem gone. Sounds the same.

        great thks guys
far out 55k's... they must make the disks a bit softer these days - am guessing dragging the boat around wont help the cause!

        cheers

Yup warped rotors, I'd replace them with DBA slotted rather than getting them skimmed

forget about machining, for the price you pay might as well get a new set...and yes disk replacement = DIY saturday job

Just curious, i was wondering how the slotted rotors go when full of mud?

I need to replace mine next week when i get home and i was told dont get slotted if using in off road conditions...

No problem, the slots aren't that deep and they clean pretty quickly with a couple of brake applications. You chew out pads quicker but that's offset by the better braking performance i.e. less fade

I got my Prado when it had 80K on the clock. The previous owner had a small boat but I don't know how big/heavy. My relos in Sydney test drove the car for me and didn't notice the shudder. I noticed it after the deal was done and flew over to Sydney to pick it up. No major dramas, got it machined and it's all good now.

I heard slotted is the go, but don't get cross drilled for 4wd applications.

However, I believe this is all covered in the Brakes section.
