  • Insurance Q from a newbie

    Hi guys,

My husband and I are buying a 2007 Prado Gxl this week, I'm just trying to sort out some insurance for it and was wondering if you can suggest a company that is good and reliable? Or even give us a heads up if there are particular things we have to look out for (we've not owned a 4x4 before). I'm aware we have to list the extras (such as lift kit/snorkel etc).
I've done a few online quotes and the price is quite varied, just to give you an idea Suncorp are around $1,300; NRMAQld was just over $1,000; RACQ was $500.

    Thanks
    Chaz

In obtaining quotes it is advisable to ask about 2 items in particular
-windscreen replacement (without affecting no claim)
-hire cars in the event your car is off the road because of an accident (some insurance companies allow for them, but not in remote areas, you can pay extra to get this cover added, I think it is about $40 a year approx with my insurance, just cant remember exactly)

also list all accessories including items such as floor mats,it all counts,if its not listed its not coverd.

Hope this is of some help,I got caught out on the hire car one

Agree on the windscreen cover, though it depends on what RACQ type cover you have as to whether you also need spare car cover as Ultra Care I think covers some of this also with regards hire cars (and activation of usage ie breakdown versus theft).

From an insurance perspective NRMA have changed policy recently (sometime inthe last 12 months) as I recently wanted to add some new changes to my policy as I had done previously as was told that they do not need to know anymore and the policy will not reflect the changes.

They will cover any mods done that sit within the bounds of the law (they are specific about this) and must be permanently bolted to the car (this therefore does not cover a portable fridge, GPS etc as this is considered home contents with away from home cover).

As I live in QLD and my car comlies with QLD law they will honour any changes done (no I haven't actually tested this yet), so a suspension lift, dual battery system, bullbar etc is all covered. Things to watch out for are larger than legal tyre like a 265/65/17 going to a 265/70/17 as this is over the current 15mm allowable change but a 275/65/17 is within the change limit, hence a coverage issue .

I suggest no matter where you go this is also a good question to ask

Actually it doesnt. WHICH PISSED ME OFF.

i did a quote on RACQ for the Prado we are thinking about buying, and my wife and i are about the same age, i have held my licence for longer and she is on a good behaviour bond for too many speeding fines over the last 12months, and she is STILL cheaper to insure the car. By a fair bit as well, i think it was $80/yr.

we are both nearly 30 so thats not some under 25 bs either.

PUT ALL CAR INSURANCE IN THE WIFES NAME< WILL SAVE YOU A FORTUNE>
