hi all,
i have been researching and looking to buy a prado for last twelve months and have spent all of that time looking for the most current vechile i could find.
i have came across a 06 grande turbo diesel which is pre d4d with the 4 speed auto. prado has done 78000 km and appears to be in excelent condition and reasonably priced. should i be concerned with the klms for the age of the car, and if anyone can tell me the power and gearing difference between older and d4d turbo diesels. also the diesels appeared to get upgrades alot slower than petrol models??? thanks,

mate mine is 2005 with 140k so the kays arnt to bad

I think for the older motor sometime around 2006 they went to a 5 speed auto so you may want to check that one

D4D has about 25% more power and 5 speed auto

its one of those things there is rumour of a V6 turbo diesel upgrade coming soon you could wait forever if you wanted to if you are happy with it jump in

If it was i, I would wait and find a good D4D, The extra power and torque and fuel efficiency is worth paying a little extra for.

I'm in the same boat as you shep, looking at a 06-09 Grande, I have another 6-12 months to wait though. My view is based on prices or D4D vs V6, the fuel cost difference is not enough to pay the MUCH higher second hand prices of teh D4D, you won't save any money.

The beauty of the Grande is you can buy one as old as 2003 (v6) and it will be almost identical to the 2009 model, same engine, tranny, gadgets etc. Pirices for the older ones are $30k-$40K. a 2008 GXL D4D is closer $50K... why would you bother paying the extra?

Just my view anyway.

Shep,

which vairant you buy should be driven by what you want to do with it.
Everyone will have a an opinion on what engine/gearbox variant is best but here is my opinion:

Long range touring towing - D4D
Long range touring not towing - D4D or TD
Everything else - V6.

My advise would be to decide which variant you want based on the type of usage then choose a year/model that suits your budget.

hey all,
thanks for your advice on my procrastination, but i flew down to brissie from cairns to view prado and the vechile was all i expected.
black grande in tidy condition so i coulnt say no now could i. brought it and drove back to cairns in absolutely typical nth qld tropical weather and all went good.
primary use is city/highway driving with light camper trailer and as yet i have been pleasantly suprised with the performance of the td engine.
