It unlocks the shifter when it's been put into park before the vehicles hand brake has been applied and the vehicle weight is held by the locking tabs inside the box, not the h/brake. The best way to avoid this is to move shifter to Neutral, apply h/brake, take foot off foot brake and allow the weight to be held by the h/brake then move shifter through to PARK.
I know a bloke with a Merc and he always said the hand brake was un-necessary with autos and used to just bang his into PARK and get out and leave it! He's changed his mind after having major probs. getting it out of PARK on a hill and had to get assistance from MB.
