  • Seatbelt extenders

Any parents of small children out there that can tell me how they fit three child seats in the back of the Prado? Better still, tell me where they found a seat belt extender for a childs booster seat that suits the odd sized late model (08) Prado seatbelt buckles? Better still again, anyone want a spare child?!

Toyota have once again let me down and passed me from department to department...Love the Prado , but I'm beginning to wish it was a Nissan or Ford (shivers with disgust) or something other than a bad service from toyota staff Toyota.

    Re: Seatbelt extenders

    Hi Mick,

Yes I understand your frustration, however all hope is not lost!!! We had the same dilemma and after much looking around we found that the Safe & Sound Compaq Deluxe Booster seats are substantially narrower (i think around 50mm) than most others. When looking at them all we realised that pretty much all of the seats had exactly the same seating space, it is just that most of them have great big bulbous sides to make them look good.

We also needed a booster and found some seats that are "Secure" brand. In my opinion they are the best booster seat I have seen. They can pivot at the base to suit different seat angles, the head support is height adjustable so it is always just the right size and they have a rear tether so they are safer in an accident. Don't quote me but I think you can get a harness for them as well so they can be simply more like a big Child seat.

2 of the Compaq seats and 1 of the Boosters fits perfectly across the back seats. My other little tip is if you want to still be able to fold down one of the seats for access into the rear (if you have more than 3 kids), place the 2 car seats on the drivers side and middle seat, and use the passenger side for the booster. When you fit the car seats tie a length or chord around the base pivot of the car seat in the middle, then pass the belt buckle through it before you buckle it in. You can then tighten the cord and it pulls the buckle nice and snug against the side of the seat. which then leaves the passenger side rear seat with enough room to fold up and down (after quickly removing the booster - but that only takes 1 second) without fouling on the car seats.

If i have made absolutely no sense just let me know and I will try to take some pictures, or if your any where near Logan, you could PM me and drop around to see what I mean for yourself.

As for taking a child off your hands, I already have 5 of my own so I think that's enough!!!

        Re: Seatbelt extenders

Thanks Steptoe, I'm pretty sure I know what you mean re seat set up for middle row with fold down passenger seat. As for getting the child seat brands...Too late we already have all the seats, now we need to solve the dilemma of finding belt extenders to suit. I'm thinking I might have to just get a suitable bit of hardware and some webbing to make my own. Bloody lot of double stitching through folds of webbing though!Probably be in breach of some laws too, I'm sure.

P.S Five is three too many for me...Hope they're all well and don't give you too much greif though all the same.

          Re: Seatbelt extenders

Suggest looking in the yellow pages.

I'm fairly certain I have seen seat belt manufacturers here in WA, recall something in Welshpool, so a compliant extender belt shouldn't be a major issue.

If they can be supplied for larger sized passengers on aircraft (seen it myself) then surely they can be sourced for a vehicle.

            Re: Seatbelt extenders

Seat belt extenders are easy enough to find Jarrah, it's the tongue fitting that is hard to find a match for the Prado. I've had a message recently from a new member who is in the business of extender belts, I will be placing an order soon no doubt.

              Re: Seatbelt extenders

I've got two kids in boosters and one baby in the middle. I
have a seat belt extender that I got from repco. Fits great and I
have tied it to the booster arm rest with a cable tie. That way my
five year old can clip in easily.
