Can anyone help me?

My speedo has stopped working.
I took it to Brighton Toyota [morons] who told me l have to replace the console. To install, calibrate etc....$2000.00. ARE YOU JOKING!
In the meantime, the speedo mysterious started to work. You beauty. So much for a electronic problem Toyota!
Took it to another service guy who services the car usually, he recons it has had a ABS error and the rear sensors were dirty and this could have been the problem.
6 months latter and the bloody thing has stopped again.

Hi Dirtman,
Definately by-pass the Toyota techs, go to a reputable Car Instrument tech, my mate learnt this the hard $$$$ way, they had his instrument cluster PCB out and fixed in no time and didn't wreck the dash surrounds doing it . Sorry can't provide anything more helpfull to you in Melbourne.

Try these guys, don't know if they work on late model cars, they fixed the speedo in my GQ

Hi dirtman,

Have a look at this thread... I had similar issues with my tacho - took it to Brighton Toyota only to have a similar reply to yours. Then found a bloke in Moorabbin/Cheltenham, who replaced a servo motor for $275...

Just recently had the same issues in the 90 series.....went straight to a speedo place & they pulled the speedo PCB out & re soldered it. Because mine was intermittent where are still in the testing phase but so far so good.

The initial signs where the cruise light was flashing & disconnecting after hitting a large bump, then the speedo was visibly slowing when the car was not & finally it was reading 0 @ around 100km/h.

Thanks guys for your remarks. Will take it for a service shortly and will discuss with him about a speedo man.

Also noticed that the last fuel tank gauge needle fluctuates alot. It seems to read correctly, then will drop down, go back up, slowly, but is obvious. Maybe a loose or damaged wire in the main tank gauge which maybe relates to the speedo??????

Seeing that other gauges are having problems, sounds like "DRY" solder joints, common fault on all makes of instrument clusters. If you were local I could resolder it for you, sorry mate.

Yep, the console (speedo only) had given up.
Just so happens the service place had a wrecked one up for grabs.
$350 later all fixed

does anybody know of anywhere in sydney I have similar issue but with the Rev counter and also affects the Cruise control, stops working. After a rough day driving it was fixed but only lasted about 4 or 5 days.

Not really a drama, but...

Does anyone know if the speedo can be adjusted for accuracy? Mine reads about 10% fast. I wouldn't mind 2-3%, but 10% is a bit too far out for my liking. I have a ScanGuage, and it reports speeds that are much closer to the GPS speeds I see. So the engine management computer obviously knows the speed more accurately, and it seems its only the speedo dial itself. Are they cable-driven these days, or all electronic?
