Up here in the UK our Toyota manual tells us its for extremely cold temperature starts when you need to put a great deal of load on the alternator i.e lights, aircon, heated rear windows etc all flat out.

This just got posted on the other forum ! hahaha Its a classic, you guys better check!

My 2007 VX D4D has the idle up button. I've just removed the fuse cover &
looked up behind the switch to find that there are no wires into it. It is
being used as a blank. Maybe Toyota had run out of blanks and had an
oversupply of idle-up switches?

It is a D4D thing.
Just go back and see how many agree with a cold start function!

All the idle up switches I have been associated with were to do with the air conditioning. If you switch it on when you have the air conditioner on it should bring the revs up above idle while you are stationary. Once you move off, everything should come back to normal. Diesels don't like to idle for too long because they glaze up in the bores, hence the idle up switch.

I have the "Idle up" button in my D4D GX. i have used it on cold mornings and it immediately increases the revs. (i couldn't find anything in the manual either (despite looking and looking).
It only works when the car is stationary. If you are moving even slightly (say in neutral), it cuts out and the revs return to normal range. When you take off, it cuts out and when you get to the traffic lights and stop, it increases the revs again. It seems to do this until the engine temp increases before it cuts out all together. In summary: it only increases revs for a few minutes, won't work when moving (though it starts again when stopped, if engine is still cold) and cuts out when engine temp increases.2007 GX D4D Auto, 694s, Tint, Dual Batts, long ranger water tank, IPF Fatboys, Brown Davis bash plate, ScanGauge2, Safari Snorkel, Sovereign Bullbar, ARB lift kit

Re: idle up switch
Drummo thanks for the support,Originally posted by FazzaI have just purchased a D4D and my dealer explained it as a fast idle controlOriginally posted by bernieDoes anyone know what the "idle up switch" , on a VX diesel, is supposed to do? there is nothing in the owners manual{or i'm blind}
Bernie
when starting the engine & is normally not required (It may only work when the engine is very cold)
Fazza.
I would say we can now all agree. That is what my dealer told me it was for, when I first took delivery back in February this year. ("It is a D4D thing", not earlier models)
Haven't things changed, as I only had to wait three weeks for delivery after I had placed my order.

Idle up Switch
Hi,
I am new to the forum, but I have an answer to the idle up question.
I have just purchased a new September build prado which has the said switch and again not listed in the manual.I contacted the local agent and was told is is for cold weather starting where it increases the idle rpm until the engine reaches a set point then cuts the rpm back to normal. It was suggested to me that this switch is not required when driving in Australia.

Hi davidb,
That is correct only needed for cold weather starting, if you do any Alpine snow holiday's it may be handy
Have a good time with Pradopoint

Idle up.... hrmm could that be something to do with adjusting your engine Idle revs. Like on my old Hilux its a screw thingy that you tweak to make the engine rev higher when sitting at idle (traffic lights or something). Just a thought......
