set up like the old hilux interchanging from 4 to 2 wd and back
interesting as I have another brand of 4WD which allows me to select 2WD and AWD (70/30 changes to 60/40 under expected traction loss) and there is no noticable difference in fuel consumption between both 2WD and AWD.

Re: prado conversion from 4wd to 2wd coming soon

One of my friends had an old Landcruiser Std wagon with constant locked hubs. He keep an accurate log book, when he converted the hubs to free wheelers, and found absolutely no difference in fuel economy. So different vehicles could be effected differently. Other problem as others have mentioned is that Prados don't have a traditional transfer case, we have a centre diff, so major engineering to replace that.

Re: prado conversion from 4wd to 2wd coming soon

I've done some long trips in a variety of 4wd vehicles and have tried it both in 2wd and 4wd and to be quite honest, with modern 4wds the difference in consumption is almost immeasurable.

We have an agency policy of vehicles are to be driven in 4wd when off the bitumen - regardless of what condition the dirt roads are. There are still some old school guys out there who will only engage the 4wd when the going gets really rough. They think they are saving on fuel.

And then they wonder why the troopies and patrols keep falling over on the gravel. Oh, surprise, surprise - not in 4wd and driving too fast for the conditions.

I'll keep mine constant 4 wheel drive (not all wheel drive) thankyou.

Same here 4wd drive on the dirt. It handles better and the fuel cost savings will not out weight the cost of the install.
