  • replace the 90lt sub tank

hey guys was just wanting to know if anyone in melb make and fit a bigger long range tank as to replace the back 90lt??

there is a place in adelaide that are doing it at the moment to get another 55 litre to take it to a total 235 litre so no need to carry spare fuel and fill up in some dodgy places up north.
    thanks corallen

Re: replace the 90lt sub tank

      Corallen,
I like the idea. My brother in law went up the tanami recently and, to be able to do it comfortably in a 4.5 Cruiser, he fitted a new tank and now has 270 lts. When I thought about for my Prado, I considered the following issues. An extra 80 lt in the rear, about 60 kilos; heavy duty suspension to accomodate; when would I use it- maybe only for the Tanimi; cost benefit equation.

I went across the Simpson last year, refuelling in Oonadatta and finishing in Birdsville. I figure that is the most fuel used without the ability to refuel. I would have done it without extra fuel but I took two 20 ltr jerries and used them asap.

On reflection, and considering the above, I can see the fact that you can do it...attractive...that not many and I mean very few, have done it...original...I wouldn't have to go into a service station for 2700 kms...when will I check the oil and get some goodies? ...Ah stuff it, 180 lts is enough!

I agree, possibly for those who do long range touring in a petrol 120 it would be worth considering, mainly for the safety aspect, to save carrying petrol in cans.
For the average diesel owner, for the very few times that we are going to need more than 180 litres, we can carry extra diesel relatively safely in one or two jerry cans.
        Cheers, Wayne

Hi dirttracker, The Tanami is no problem with a Prado, (well a diesel anyway) i have towed my camper trailer across there a couple of times including going into Wolfe Creek, only took 1 20ltr Jerry of diesel. anyway there are quite a few places to get extra fuel if you need it, Tilmouth well, Yuendemu, Rabbit flat, and Bililuna.
Next year we are planning on taking the camper trailer along the canning Stock route and fuel looks like it may be a fairly big issue, i have been weighing up the cost of a brown davis sub tank but i believe they are over a grand so cant justify the expense at this stage.

            Cheers Andrew

thats right AJ120 l got an email back from brown davis and replace the 90lt back tank with a 170 litre cost is $1300 fitted.

so if there is enough good fuel stops around then l guess it is prob a waste of time money prob better put to a nice 3" ehaust

              cheers corallen

I was looking at doing the same when the wife said no and thought about it more. If we did the drive all the time then fine but carrying some fuel and using it straight off is better and if you come across fuel you fill the Prado again and the jerry cans and on your way.
