Seems to be a trend with late model 120s being stolen

Here's the confirmed list from PP, they're all from NSW and all in the last few months

    Re: Stolen 120s

How is this happening when they are fitted with immobilisation deterrents?

Have the crooks got some sort of gadget now or are these vehicles being lifted onto trucks?

I think in some cases houses are broken into and keys are taken.

Good idea not to have your home address in your "Navman" but just your home town. If someone steals your car while your out they can punch in "my home" drive to your house and open the garage with the remote that's also in your car and rob your house too!

The only problem with the putting only the home town in your Navman is when they look in the glove box and find your resistration and then type in your address

              Re: Stolen 120s

I guess the 120 prado will be a bit of a target from now on for the guys stripping them down.
There is a guy on ebay stripping a 2005 120. From the parts he has listed so far, I am at a loss to see any damage that would have written it off.

Could be from water damage as there will be no visible damage.

The same thought crossed my mind.

I bet he lists it at a high start price.

                      Re: Stolen 120s

Very few cars manufactured since 02/03 are stolen without the use of keys - which the thieves obviously get by breaking into your home, the repair shop or where ever else they may be located. Compulsory immobiliser legislation put a pretty big dent in the stolen vehicle statistics with the early to mid 1990s Commodores still up there as number 1 choice of car thieves.

Sure, traytop trucks and trailers are used to swipe specialty vehicles but these numbers are way lower than those stolen by first aquiring the keys. There are also a handful stolen because owners left them unattended with keys in the ignition and a few are stolen in car-hijacking scenarios.

The sophistication of factory engine immobilizers ensures that those determined thieves, who go shopping for prestige and sports vehicles, do their homework to identify where the car is garaged and then usually break in whilst the owners are asleep or out in another vehicle before entering and getting the keys.

Of course, a vehicle "stolen" and then found burnt out, and the owner surprisingly still has both sets of keys, is sure to raise the eyebrows of the insurance assessor.

                        Re: Stolen 120s

Right! I know a couple of stories where people have quickly nipped inside because they have forgotten something as they were leaving to go somewhere. Left the car for no more than a minute. Get back and mobile, laptop, sunglasses, money from ash tray .... all gone and nobody in sight. Keys in car with engine running so you can imagine what could have happened. Similarly, someone dashed inside to go to the toilet, which was upstairs. On the john a few minutes, come back down stairs to no TV, stereo, DVD player etc etc. Unbelievable! All in just a few minutes. Crimes of opportunity. You can never be too careful. It's amazing what thieves take note of and what opportunities they watch out for.

Most of the time I fill at the Hi Flow diesel pump which can be some distance form the register. so I take my keys AND lock the car.

Also as per advice on this thread, ( thanks ) deleted my exact HOME address from any navigation devices, ( now goes to the local Police Station ) also made sure no paperwork is left in the car which identifies my home address. Paranoid maybe, but a few minutes effort may make a difference.
                            Cheers, Wayne
