  • ARB say no to dual batteries.

Was at my local ARB yesterday discussing rear bars and the such. The topic of cracks in 120 series came up and the staff member said that they were no longer fitting dual batteries under the bonnet of 120's due to the cracks on the inner guard.

He had not heard of any rear door cracks and was suprised when I mentioned it. He said that ARB and Kaymar probably won't make a rear bar /tyre carrier because there is no demand for them.

He did know of the cracks caused alledgedly by bullbars, but maintained that there were some vehicles that were cracking with out bars??
It seems there is no rhyme or reason as to which ones are cracking and which are not!

Wow really? The 120 Cracks? This is really bad I just order a D4D. Can you explain it in a little more details as in what and how and where the cracks appear? I thought the 120 was kinda built to last and quite strongly built. Cannot believe such a car design to do 4WD will crack. Just imagine the car cracks while you in the bush and the inner guard peals away and the chassis crack........what a horrible thought. I still got my X-Trail, and never heard that one crack and it suppose to be a on road car instead of offroad........
    Thanks

IMHO it's more talk vs the problem itself... ARB just wants to cover their asses in the case of problem as Toyota says it is because of their mods...

The inner guard cracks on some prados (which is a thin steel like in a can) it's not a big deal...

So you mean just little crack right? not the entire inner guard gets ripped off right? But it should crack anyway in my opinion.
        Thanks

Just one more question. Is the crack more of a cosmetic or structural one?
          Thanks

The cracks are on the inside of the inner guard. i don't think the are structural. there are photos on LCOOL i think.

The rear door cracks would be fixed on the new models I think as they are fitting new doors (as opposed to fixing the old ones) to the older ones and the new ones are strengthend in all the right places!

as an aside to this post..
the ARB rep also said they have an early 120 series with all the gear on it and it has never had a problem.

Still would not put me off buying one. I worked for Toyota for 17 years and they still make the best gear out there by a mile.

I would like to know where these cracks show up also.
                I will search lcool.

I have heard of it before and have looked many times under the bonnet for just that.
From memory it is said that extra weight of accessories and the fact the body is rubber mounted to the chassis is the reason.
It flexes more than its designed to do.
Have also heard of shops adding spacers under the front rubbers to help this. For the reason of giving the chassis a bit of droop without pulling the body down with it.
I have a steel bar and winch (which I have heard adds to the above problem) And also dual batteries.

A fellow westcoast4X4 member is upgrading to a D4D after 4 years of 4X4ing and touring ( with steel bar/ dual battery) and we looked for cracks at easter. none to be seen.

                Jeff.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

Dual batteries get fitted to mine this week by Northcoast 4x4. I had better ask about this before the work starts !!

I heard the same thing when i was installing my dual batteries. I ended
up getting a piranha battery cradle as they gauranteed that it wouldnt
crack the inner guard and if did they would pay to have it fixed but if it came to the crunch who knows .Mine has been in for over 12 months
                    and no problems .

ARB will put a second battery in but they put it on the passanger side, they move the fuel filter and place a smaller battery there.
I saw a prado at the Sydney caravan, camping and 4x4 show with 1.
I asked about it and the guy said it was more to do with the battery mount coming out of the guard
