  • High speed steering wheel wobble

Yes another steering wheel wobble thread.
I have already read EVERYTHING i can find regarding this but my issue is eluding me.

I bought my 2006 prado 120 gxl petrol with 200 thousand km about a year ago, private sale in an area of brisbane where no highways are nearby.
Therefore i did not test drive at highway speed.
Well it wasnt long before i did drive on the highway and starting around 80km/h the steering wheel wobbles from side to side a few mm quite a few times a second.

    Things done to date:

Rather than have my existing half worn tyres balanced, i bought new bridgestone d697 265/65R17LT which did not change the problem.
fitted by oldmac toyota springwood. They are never seeing my car again. Delivered me tyres covered in white stuff around the bead and were utterly unhelpful in diagnosing my issues.

I checked front and rear suspension bushes, ball joints and wheel bearings, all look okay, found no play or loose components.

Replaced tie rods and rack ends, once i had rack end boots off I found fluid so had my steering rack reconditioned.

    Replaced lower control arm bushes.

2 wheel alignments and 4 wheel balances including 2 hunter road force balances which told me 9 and 14kg or less for each wheel/tyre combo after match mounting. Unfortunately the places with road force machines did not have finger flanges and therefore wheel was fitted with cone.
However, i did have a standard dynamic wheel balance with fingers and maybe it was slightly better but not fixed.
One of the balancers noted the front right tyre has a hang bead which they suggest i go back to place i bought tyres with, but also noted its unlikely to be my issue.

On inspecting the lower bush of my suspected original front shocks i noted an off centre crush tube but have not replaced as have been advised its unlikely to be my issue.

Replaced both front cv drive axles. I was sure this woukd fix it.. but nope

Through all these changes i noted only changes around wheel balance but usually worse not better.

Can someone PLEASE help me troubleshoot and eventually fix my steering wheel wobble?
Running out of money to replace parts which are not faulty!

    Vibration/wobble must originate from a rotating part. Some things to check;
    - wheels correctly mounted, do they rotate true when on the car or is there something stopping them from mounting flush.
    - Wheel bearings
    - Drive shaft straight
    - Tailshaft balance ( I had an old holden where this caused weird problems)

      Thanks for your reply krypto!

Wheels (17" factory alloys) seem to mount well, no play between wheel and the hub centre (its a tight fit as i understand it should be).
By eye and hand they seem to spin without excessive runout on the car.

I cannot detect any play or sound from wheel bearings with the wheels off the ground (or on).

By "drive shafts straight" do you mean propeller shafts? CV's have been replaced with new aftermarket last weekend (repco)
How do I check if my tail/propeller shafts are straight?
I greased them again the other day and no difference.
Considering doing a highway test with front/rear propeller shafts removed (one at a time) and locking centre diff, but dont want to break anything else.
Similar to balance how do i check it?

See if you can get another set of wheels to try, borrow some if possible to rule out the rims/tyres.

You could also have it put onto a 4T hoist and run up to see if anything stands out as causing a vibration.

How are the disc’s? If they’re warped you’ll have the steering wheel shuddering... a quick machine or replacement will fix that!

Would love a loaner set of wheels to try! Unfortunately none accessible.

Hoist sounds like a good idea.

Brake rotora have all been replaced very recently and issue was present before replacing. Also now no brake pedal pulsation since replacing.

i removed front propeller shaft and no change to issue. Rear one out next

i am starting to get really sus on shock absorbers

              Update:

issue remains with tail shaft removed.

measured lateral and radial front wheel runout to less than 0.3mm in both directions. Also tested wheel bearing and ball joints with dial indicator.

i detect no play in front and rear diff inputs.

only really leaves suspension... anyone had this issue due to worn shocks?

                A few questions to help you narrow the problem;
Can you feel the wobble sitting in different parts of the car or does it only come through the steering wheel?
Is it always present and get progressively worse with speed or does it come and go at a certain speed range?

I feel it through the steering wheel, it's a (wobble) pulsating left to right which seems to increase frequency with higher speed.
Comes on around 80-90km/h and is still there and more obvious at 100km/h, sometimes I think I can feel it at 70km/h but as a lower frequency(slower) left/right wobble/pulsation.

It all points at wheels/tyres to me, but I have had them balanced and road force balanced by 4 different places now, one of which used fingers to mount the wheel (the others didn't have them).
It is possible that some balances worked a little better than others, but none of them resolved the issue entirely.
The last place I had balance them made a comment that I have a hang bead on my front right, but that it is unlikely to be my issue and it balanced up ok on their road force balance with 14kg road force variation which was within their tolerence of 18kg, they showed me the screen at the end on the hunter gsp9700 all green for both fronts.

I do feel other bumps come through the seat when driving at highway speed, not sure if this is normal or is an indication of worn shock absorbers? Bearing in mind they are tokico shocks and therefore probably original.

Is there anyone in the south of Brisbane (Kuraby) who would lend me their wheels for a 15 minute test drive?

Would an on vehicle balance make any difference?

                        It shouldn't should it?

I will say this, seems like every time someone balances the wheels they get a different result.
Not sure if this is because their balancers are all calibrated differently, or the wheel is not mounting consistently.

But I had the wheels mounted with finger flange and it did not solve the issue...

I am booked in for a shock absorber test at pedders this afternoon on their test lane... will be interesting to see what they think.

Update after pedders check this afternoon:

They could not detect any play in and of the usual bits, ball joints, wheel bearings, CV's etc

They think they can hear wheel bearing grumble with stethoscope on the front coils.

So okay yeah maybe the wheel bearings are on the way out, when I changed the CV drive axles last week I noticed the inner hub seal was severely damaged and therefore it was on my replacement list.

BUT with no play in the wheel, could the wheel bearings be the cause of my steering wheel wobble at 80km/h++???

Also I reckon I can now feel it at lower speeds when the road is smooth too.. maybe 65km/h+

                            Update:
pulled hubs out and whwel bearings are very crunchy so will see if replacing them helps
