  • Suspension/Tyres upgrade (Beach/sand driving)

    Hi all,
Just bought my first Prado today (GXL V6) and have some spare cash burning a hole in my pocket at the moment (I've never really bothered with modding my cars in the past). Ive read a few of the suspension threads but got a bit overwhelmed with the amount of information and kind of gave up after a while so sorry for asking a very common question, but I thought i might make it a bit more specific to ease the repetition.

Just a bit of background first. I'm not a 4x4 guru but I'm competent in soft stuff and have been 4x4ing since I got my licence 20 years ago. My rig will be predominently used in WA to go surfing and fishing using mildly rocky backtracks and soft sand beach driving (I work away so not much daily commuting and maybe one "bush" trip away up north per year).
Now bearing in mind I usually just get the biggest tyres my car could handle without rubbing, is it worth getting a suspension lift or should I just keep to the tyres only? I don't load the car up to the max for trips away (no fridge, roof top tent etc.) and at the moment it's unlikely I'll get a bullbar but may get a flat rack on the roof.

Hopefully this wasn't too painful being the 100000000001 time this question has been asked.
    Cheers

From my (limited) experience, for beach don't worry about any of it. Get an air compressor, tire deflator, shovel, recover points, snatch strap and maxtrax.
Deflate the tires before going onto the sand or rocky stuff and you'll be fine.

If there are some major rocks, underbody protection would be good.

I forgot to mention that I was already leaning towards a lift due to the age of the car (04 with 200k kms).
I do like the idea of putting airbags in the rear (if I do a lift) in case I change my mind and load up the car more than I usually do for a trip. Since my budget is about $2k this may not be realistic, so is it an option to install the airbags later on or is it much more cost effective to do it at the same time as the lift?

$2k lift doable. Plenty of info on here. Airbags done at same time should add very little to labour costs but done later will be several hours of paid labour of 3 or4 hours if you do it yourself.

From my experience I wouldn't bother with the airbags unless you're towing or doing a lot of trips with the car extremely loaded. I have HD Lovells springs in the rear and they give a really nice ride and doesn't sag with the rear full of gear including a 75 litre fridge/freezer, three kids, water, camping gear and full tanks of diesel. When empty the car rides comfy and handles great. You should be able to get a full kit fully installed for around $1,600ish or around $750 if you're good on the tools DIY.
Most important IMHO is always tyres, brakes and suspension
            Cheers, Ben
