  • Diving with Key

Just saw a question on the 150 thread about surfing with the 150 keyless entry and have a similar problem with the 120.

What do I do with the key when I go diving? I know water proof wallets are available but not sure how they stand up to 30m I should imagine that the key would not like salt water. To date I have always been able to leave key with someone, or lock in a car that does not have electronic keys but one day I will be caught.

    Re: Diving with Key

    Hi,

I purchased one of the blanks from ebay and then had it cut by a locksmith. That way you can open the door manually with it. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/SUIT-TOYOTA-P...item2c552ed7e4

      Hi Bgreeni

Any locksmith can cut you a plain key (just an old toyota key), and the good think is, that it will only open the doors, if you try to start the engine, the starter will turn over, but engine won't fire as there is no transponder to disable the imobiliser.
If you have your key code they can cut the new one from it, in my case I didn't have the code, but my locksmith put my key in his machine and it could work out the code.
Also as its a plain key it will also fit in your wallet. I use it everytime I go to beach, I know what damage the salty environment can do to electronics.

I'm not a diver but I often go places near creeks, etc and I figure fresh water is not good for it either. I have a small lockbox, just a steel box with a padlock, which I lock my starter key in, it is usually packed away in the other stuff in the boot. The key to the lockbox and the plain key I had cut which just opens the doors are on a lanyard around my neck. These can take a dunking without any problems.

You can try one of these:

          http://www.surflock.com.au/

I got a similar lock (just different brand) from Bunnings for $90, also has a sliding cover over the key pad thing. I use it whenever I go surfing or paddling, plus your mates can still get in the car if you stay in the water longer. I attach mine under the front of the car to the factory tie down points. Used it hundreds of times in that spot including in the rain and no problems with water entry either.

            Hey bgreeni
I have the same problem when I go diving but mine came with a third key with no transponder. I've got that attached to a thumb clip & clip it off to my BC when I dive.

              Re: Diving with Key

If Im Diving to 30m, then its out of a boat, so I leave keys in boat, along with mobile ph, wallet, etc.
Are you doing shore dives to 30m deep?

Anyway, if swimming, diving, surfing, I would suggest a blank key and leave in a concealed place

Is that the grey key?? If so it's the vallet key, does everything except unlock the glovebox, it does have a transponder, but not a transmitter. The transponder disable the engine immobiliser, the transmitter is used for keyless door unlocking.

The transdonder is still electronic and can be damaged by water.
