  • New to Prado and forum with diesel spilling from fuel tank

    Hi All.
i am a new Prado owner 2 weeks and on first diesel fill up of my 2009 Diesel 120 had fuel leaking out from the tank area under the car as i filling up.
the car was just under one quarter tank with the 90 litre light on. Put about 65 litres in before i saw the fuel leaking out. Fuel gauge then read half tank and no 90 light which seemed high . Fuel stopped leaking out when i stopped putting fuel in and i have not seen any fuel leaking out since. Drove 110km and fuel guage was showing a bit under half. Next time in car guage has gone to 90litre light on and full which sounds about right given fuel in and km travelled.
is this a false sensor and shutting off fuell intake and sending fuel to overflow or any idea on what is going on before i climb under and pull the bash plate off to check for damage.
thanks and look forward to learning from others.

With regard to how the fuel guage is working thats right. If tanks are both full the guage shows full, as it emptys it will drop until first tank is empty, just before which the guage will show 1/2 ( 1/2 of 180L). then it will go to full again with 90L light on. guage then show actual capacity of second tank (90l to empty). warning light comes on at about 30L left.
The fuel leaking out could be due to the rubber hose from filler to the tank perishing, has been known to be a problem but its a quick fix to replace.

because the fuel transfer system uses a venturi pump to transfer fuel from main to second tank all the time engine is running ( fuel returns to main by a overflow hose) it sometimes is a bit erratic in showing true capacity, mainly after sitting for a while.

Thanks for the reply on the gauge. I will crawl under and see if i can work out whats going on once i remove the bash plate.

Hi its not the filler pipe that all looks ok and no sign of the leak there. It was coming from more the middle of the tank under the bash plate. Looks like there has been a decent dent into the plate and suspect a fracture of the tank . When it stops raining i will drop the plate and see what the damage is.
thanks for the heads up about the fuel gauge.

Bash plate off and no sign of leak so went to servo to add some fuel while im under looking for tell tale signs. As soon as the cap was released i could see the hose was the culprit.
You were spot on sparky. Thanks

Split filler hose between tanks, always the culprit.
