I hope all is well during these trying times.
I was spraying down my 2003 Prado 3.0TDI vx and noticed what looked like a twig hanging from below... but it was half a belt. Opened up the hood, and saw the top two pulleys empty (photo) and the other half.
From my investigations, it seems that the top 2 pulleys are for the air conditioner and the "idler" (I don't understand its function). The double belts were recently changed and seem fine on the alternator and the water pump.
I just wanted to check to see if I had no problems driving at least to the mechanic to get the new belts. And for future wisdom, if in a pinch I could drive farther.
If anyone can enlighten me on the design/functionality/maintenance/use/fault cases that would be great, as I had to sift through the Internet scare stories that you can't drive more than 5 minutes after breaking a belt before hell breaks loose. I found a design diagram (attached for reference) , and it seems that the most important pulleys, driving the alternator and water pump, are on a separate system and have double belts... I imagine to give more fault tolerance?
Can you drive on one belt on that lower system to at least get to new belts, mechanic?
My ignorance thinks that this design shows Toyota burliness and deepens my love of my P120 tank.
