  • 4x4 selector shaking

    Hi guys, very new on here and not mechanically minded
    I've had this shake for sometime now that makes the 4x4 selector shake like crazy and literally feel it under my feet and under my seat and it's driving me mad, I've done engine mounts, transmission mounts just had injectors done, someone has said maybe I have an unbalanced tailshaft I've got under and have had a good look and seems there is no movement on tailshaft at all, any ideas?

    Drop your prop shafts and check universals.

        And it's only happening when I put it into drive, so I'm not actually moving, so when I pull up to lights is when it starts not while I'm actually driving

            I'm wanting to rectify this issue too and my mechanic's feedback was it is normal. I've pressed for a reason but he could only offer the possibility of engine mounts. I see that's not worked for you but I'm keen to sse what will.

              The problem description is a bit vague, so with that limitation .... start with the most common causes of a vibration in a vehicle and work through each in turn.
              1. Wheels out of balance. Get them balanced, doesn't cost much.
              2. Front wheel bearings. Jack up the front and check for play rocking top and bottom of wheel back and forth. There should be no freepay whatso ever
              3. Universal joints. The tailshafts don't need to be removed to check as suggested in a previous comment. Put the vehicle in neutral and check if there is any 'slop' in the universal joints by trying to twist the two sections back and forth against each other. They should be no 'slop'.
              4. A bent tailshaft. Get the longest straightedge you can find, even a piece of straight timber if nothing else (check it by eye) and check the tail shaft for straightness

                Hey mate, thanks for getting back to me. I missed the notification for your reply.

                My High-Low gear selector in my auto Grande only shakes/vibrates when I'm in Drive gear and stationary. Once I release the brake and begin moving the gear High-Low gear selector will significantly reduce vibrating or stop vibrating altogether.

                I can write off #1 and #2 (and possibly #3?) in that case. I'll see if I can see any issues with the tailshaft this weekend, cheers!
