Sounds like an aftermarket air compressor. Like an ARB. Most likely installed under the seat.

Definitely sounds like an air compressor. Doubt there would be room for one behind the dash. Check under seat or engine bay. There also could be a push switch or rocker switch that is wired so it would turn on when you turn key/start engine.

I have however noticed that it cuts out when a different mode is selected on the AC unit (EG: face fan to Floor fan).

G'day!
2006 Grande does the same. It appears to be from the ventilation distribution unit behind the driver's side dash. When you select a different mode, the buzzing fires up again but the mode doesn't change. My vents are stuck on feet/floor mode, even though I've selected face. I think the dash will have to come out to replace the unit. Gonna hurt the hip pocket I think!
