Terminal prado engine?

Hi all, looks like Pearl the prado has done another engine. <sigh>. Mechanic thinks it is terminal. Whats is best way to diagnose if piston is cracked or melted. No compression test done yet. Hard to start. Black smoke. Loud chuffing if oil filler cap removed. Any suggestions. Thks
