Winch clutch

Sorry if this has been posted before ...

Not being famililar with winches, is it advisable to leave the clutch engaged, or not, when not in use, or is this the preferred method?

when i first got my car i had never had a winch before, i left the winch in free spool and when i got to where i was going i got out and found that i had been dragging the hook, so in my experience, leave the thing in the "engaged" position.

leave it engaged so it dont unwind and give it a test run from time to time, just incase you need to use it in anger. cheers samo
