  • Fuel going off?

    G'day all,

Just wondering if anyone knows how long it takes for petrol to go 'off'??

I have just realised that the 100-120 odd litres in the Prado has been in there for about 6 or so weeks (haven't driven it in close to a month )

    Thanks a heap.

    Cheers,

    RT

RT - From my experience you will be fine. Sure it wont be a 100% fresh but wont have gone stale enough to cause any major dramas.

I have bikes that sit for way longer than that and they still run fine.

I would agree. I leave fuel in my road bike for weeks and it still runs fine. 6 weeks it should still be ok (IMO). 6 months and I wouldn't risk it. If your worried just fill it up with some fresh stuff. I just sold an old VW Beetle I had sitting in a paddock with 5 year old fuel(It was more like oil and did it stink) and it hadn't been started for about 3 years. The buyer wanted to see if it would run so we chucked a battery in her cranked her a couple of times to my surprise she started and ran fine. Not that I would do this with my Prado.

P.S New cars come from factory with a small amount off fuel in them and its a while before they are sold and topped up so it cant hurt that much. (Unless they put a special additive to the fuel from factory?)

I was always told shouldn't leave 2 stroke mix for more than 3 months in storage.
        Not sure about straight petrol.

Thanks fellers. I only run 98 Octane in it. I've managed to clock up just over 10,000k's in about 12 months. Barely been out of the shed this year

I leave my 2 stroke in storage for ages(6 months plus). I just give it a good shake in the can before I use it. I only use it in whipper snipper and rotary hoe so I'm not to worried about it.

Thats prob cos Dak Daks only had about 6:1 compression ratio. Little buggers were made to run on the finest moonshine Hitlers army could rustle up

Ha Ha gotta love em tho. Simplicity.

I am no scientist but I think fuel in a sealed can will last longer than a vented (car) tank. Reason being the vapours which are more volatile (light ends of the hydrocarbons) cannot vent out from a can where they can from a car tank (to a charcoal cannister and similar).
