  • Tyre woes

    G'day,

Well we made it across the Simpson on our standard Grandtreks without an issue. We kept an eye religiously on pressures and drove to the road conditions. Yes they had a few chips, scraps and cuts in them but nothing too serious.

Then yesterday driving just 5km I managed to run over something which has resulted in the two drivers side wheels being flat. Luckily the front tyre is a real slow leak and I was able to pump it up but the rear tyre was no good. I was not able to find the hole in either tyre so it is off to a tyre dealer tomorrow to get it sorted. Work got in the way of getting it fixed today unfortunately.

Hmm it is the perfect opportunity to upgrade though.

    Cheers

    Re: Tyre woes

    Hi Travis.
We drove through the Pilbara and Kimberley during July and August, 3 vehicles and no punctures over 8000klms although 1 put a bit of a dent in a rim and we had the usual chips and wear.
Then a couple of weeks ago did a fairly easy run and managed to split a side wall on the BFGs and chip a rim!!!
    Bugger as they say.
    Alan.

      G'day Alan

It is always when you least expect it or need it to happen as well. On our trip we had our spare tyre plus a spare tyre carcase just in case we wrecked side walls. Just spoke to the tyre dealer and they found a small hole in both tyres - all fixed and ready to go. I have asked for a quote for some BFG AT, I wonder how much they will be??

      cheers

Travis, you should get BFG AT 265/65 at about $305-$310 each if you ring around. Great tyre. Neil

                G'day Black Diamond,

Yeah i went the Bridgestones and so far i have been impressed. I have mainly done highway KM with a small (maybe 20km) on hard good dirt roads. I have the pressures for highway set at 45psi and this seems ok at this stage.

                cheers

                  Re: Tyre woes

45 psi on bitumen ? Seems tad high, unless tyre mob recommend this pressure.

I'd be inclined to run 40psi for bitumen, and the other trick i use is to rotate and balance the tyres every 5/10K that way they should last 80K or more.

if the supplier cares about their customers they will happily rotate & balance for free - I know mine does, why I go to them.

Just my 2 cents worth, now back to work

We bought the LT 694s through JAX just yesterday. The rep had previously been with Bridgestone for a number of years. Before fitting, he suggested that for highway driving the psi is best set at around 34. His explanation: The rigid side walls of the LT offer additional support and allow for a lower psi without any side wall sagging - providing a smoother ride without compromising tread wear. I was somewhat surprised but decided to give it a go. After a bit of a run today, the ride does seem quite good - better than I had expected. We will monitor wear at this psi on our upcoming trip.
