  • Re: Sovereign Bar Mount Recall?

The recovery points do fit as they use the same 2 bolt holes on each side but you will need a few longer bolts. Neil

      Thanks Keith,

Sparksy was good enough to send me the instructions and when I spoke to the Service Manager he couldn't really walk away from them since it's the first item on the tech bulletin. More so since he also told me that they had taken pictures of the bar pre the replacement mounts install. I don't know if that's a local thing or a Toyota request coz they were in fact cracked - didn't see the old ones. The comment the SM gave about the tight fit against the guards was something like "oh they thought it was a big gap before and must have over compensated for the fitting".

So it's back in on Monday for another go since the shims etc are going to be needed to get mine to sit right. Can't really fault the SM as he has looked after me before as the front desk man before getting promoted to SM but it shouldn't be going back there for a mechanics poor job that maybe wasn't checked for what is an obvious problem when lined up against others in the workshop.

Spotted a 120 series in traffic yesterday with a Sovereign bullbar, there was no clearance at all on the flare and a small amount under the head light. The fitment guide states 15mm +/- 2mm under the head light and that equates to about the same on the flare. I would guess this had been in for the remount. Toyota only allocate 3 hours for the recall work and yet its taking some dealers days to get it right.

          Gday Keith
Only just fitted Team Piggy's Outback Ideas recovery points to the Prado after the Recall work had been done.
I did not want to confuse the technicians with aftermarket accessories.
The fitment method is the same as pre recall mounts.
Search function will find many posts on the subject.
The only thing, I sourced some round tube to act as anti crush tube on the top bolt.
I drilled the outer side of the chassis to pass the crush tube through and made a spacer the thickness of that black bull bar mount before bolting it all together.

you don't need a letter. Just contact your nearest Toyota Dealer and they should be able to tell you if your vehicle is on the list by your VIN number. My recall letter turned up 2 weeks after my local Dealer had already replaced the brackets :?: :?:

Just got my letter today, not a recall as such, but pretty close too! No issue as I have an ARB bar.

                    Hi all

There is actually no need to drill the top hole for the recovery points. The top hole is M10, and an 8.8 high tensile M10 is plenty strong enough when coupled with the lower M12, and especially when you are latching to BOTH recovery points to equalise the stress. You simple push the radiator back a bit, insert an M10, and buy a long M12 dyno bolt. Cut the dyno sleeve to length to act as a crush sleeve and prevent crushing inside of the radiator section. I don't know why people are bothering with obtaining right angle drill bits etc, and going to all the effort to drill out the top hole. It seems Mr Toyota always intended for a crush sleeve because the outer top hole is M12 and the inner is M10....

                    • Re: Sovereign Bar Mount Recall?

On my way to a mates house earlier in the week, I went to my Local Toyota dealer to see about my mounts, the sevice guy first said that the recall was only for post 2005 models, I think! I replied my bullbar wasn't fitted from new. He then asked how long I had the car for, just over 2 years.. Have you notified Toyota of the change of owership, to which I replied I purchased it from a Toyota dealer.. He then said that we don't fiIl out those forms. I then asked, so why would I bother buying from a Toyota dealer?? To which he had no response.. he then added that the recall is only applicable to vehicle doing country driving over corrigations and cattle grids, apparently I don't look as though I do that!!! I then added that I have a winch, asking wouldn't that also effect the problem, again it was ignored. He then told me to inform Toyota of my change of ownership and wait for them to contact me, if it was relevant to my vehicle. I left the dealership again thinking, Toyota may make great cars, but Toyota Aust, let the team down.

Continuing to my mate I remembered that there was another dealer in his suburb, I then remembered it was actually a different branch of the same dealer, thought what the hell, I'll give it a go. There was only one person behind the counter, and was wearing a button up shirt.. I asked him exactly the same question as previously, to which he replied, Yes they are breaking. He then asked if I had been to them before, no so he proptly asked for my details, I also mentioned the winch, hen then added that the cradle would also need replacing and the new mounts nolonger matched the cradle, adding its about a 6 hr job with the winch, we did one last week it was an eye openning experience! He then asked when they could have it for a day? I had a quick look at my calendar, and replied can that I was awayh with work for the next 2 weeks, could he give me his card and I will talk to my wife and sort a time.. He then said that he would make a "dummy" booking so that the parts would be ordered and waiting for my booking.. Turned out when he gave me his card, he is the Service Manager.

I have now confirmed a booking with him, so hopefully it will all be done in time for christmas. It was a shame that my local wouldn't help, as they are only 5mins down the road, but if I have to drive 15mins to get the service that he seems to offer, I'm more that happy with that!! My faith in Toyota is a little restored, but I don't think that I should have to hunt around to fix up Toyota Austs stuff up..

I will update how they go with the winch and the recovery points.

my letter also turned up a week or so ofter it was checked. It was in for a service so they carried out the recall check while it ewas there. Obviously with an ARB bar it didn't need any work but it was registered in the system of being checked. When the letter turned up afterwoods I rang my mate the service manager and he said just bin it.
