  • Battery Mounts / Plate

Someone put me onto this site and gave me a warning: its addictive.

Having read alot of comments, thought I would throw my few in for my first topic!

I have a duel battery mount. Be sure to use good mounts. Mine was installed by a reputable business but it pulled out of the mounts tearing holes in the panel.

Bash plate. I did not think I needed one. Until a stick shot up into my radiator and completely destroyed it. I was reasonably remote at the time but it could have been worse. Will be getting bash plate, already have the recovery points from 'outback ideas'. Installation next!

Grandtrek tyres. I have heard a lot of negative comments. For what its worth, I travelled your standard tourist dirt treks in Qld/NT. Although I have 6 tyres, the 2 spares have half life, the 4 on the car are due for replacement at a total 70 000 km wear. The tyres haven't given me any problems.

Getting back to duel battery, the system has 1 amp blade fuses. Despite phoning the company who installed it several times and getting treated like an idiot, I am yet to find anyone who sells 1 amp blade fuses!! Anyone help on the fuse problem?

Bugger - you'd think a good solid tray, fitted by the pros - you should be right. I've gone the BT64 from TJM and, after reading through the stories on this forum, I've put some bloddy big penny washers in behimd the panels to help spread the load.

You're certainly getting all the gear together - have fun putting it in. All the "how to's" are right here.

1 amp fuses ?? I reckon the lowest I've seen are 3 amp. Have you got a pic of where these fuses are fitted in the system and what they look like ?

    Cheers

        They certainly are available - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7.5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 & 40 A are the standard sizes!

Any decent auto parts or electronics shop should be able to get them.

A 2 or 3 A fuse will generally be OK as a replacement though, as fuses are really only for high current short circuit protection (this is generally misunderstood - even by people who design things!).

Thanks gents, ah yeah spelling isn't that good even at the best of times.

I will continue the hunt for the 1 amp blades. I went to the extent of ringing the head office of one of the major blade suppliers of 1 amp fuses. They thought I was mad. Everyone else did too until I lifted the hood.

The same 'reputable' business who installed the unit, apart from taking my money to purchase and install the unit, abruptly referred me to a local specialist store to purchase them. Having hunted high and low, I had given up and just hope the fuse will never go.

            I will try again.

I had a Beaurepaires dealer tell me a couple of weeks ago that they are the best tyre made - so good in fact, that Toyota demands them as standard equipment (out of every tyre available). Whilst I was containing my sides from splitting, he went on to say that they are suitable for all terrain, because that's what it says on the tyre: "all terrain".

Unbelievable - he obviously feeds that line to every unsuspecting customers that wanders in.

And these people call themselves experts?

                  Hahahahah

The only thing manufacturers stipulate when specifying original tyres are smooth quiet ride and purchase price. I don't think durability ever comes into it.

                  What a knob-head.

The thing that sh*ts me is that these engineering decisions are made by bloody accountants (with all due respect to bloody accountants, of course)

But yes. I have read that that is the criteria for original fittment tyres.
Low noise, nice smooth ride and fuel economy. Not longevity or puncture resistance.

Just look at the tread depth of New grandtreks and then compare them to Cooper ST's. Or more in the same all terrain market, Cooper ATR's.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.
