  • Aircon cool not cold

Just thought i would put it out there before i call in the aircon mechanic,
my aircon continually cycles between cool and warm i wouldnt say its a cold just cool the cycle betwween the warm and cool or vice versa is about 10 to 12 seconds from one to the other hope this makes sense, gas is fine no leaks. Its a 2003 120 4lt gxl anybody had this problem or any ideas..Jase

If the A/C is cycling, then that usually ,means that it thinks it has reached the desired temperature....perhaps the thermostat needs adjusting...it should be about 4 degrees at the vents...

    Cheers

Jase, We are having the same problem with our Prado. We have recently had the compressor replaced on our 2003 model TD GXL (March this year). We have been to see an A/C specialist who checked the gas and for leaks. The temp was hovering around 14-15deg. and I was told that is normal. His response was "you will have to bring it back in when it is playing up so I can see it happening"

Might be a silly question but how do you know the gas is ok?

14-15deg. is defiantly not normal unless you 4wd in hell or maybe a center of a volcano.

No not a silly question to me as Iam probably the most un mechanical male that walks the earth, but i have just recently had the aircon shut down all together, i had blown i think they call it a resistor like a big fuse and that was when they checked pressures and so on and said all was ok but i know its not as Iam sure it should not cycle between warm and cool so often..

            Hi jas

I believe i am the most mechanically challenged person but i had a similiar problem and to fix it i was told to clean my raditor by hosing all the mud and junk out of it and it worked a treat the aircon runs fine now maybe give it a go if i can do this so can you i am sure.

              hi,
i had the same problem...toyota was saying it is normal
and 2 airconditioning experts said the same thing...gas normal
no leaks....i then took it to my neighbour mechanic and he told me
it could be the vbehicle's fan (something to do withe the silicon
overheating....but thankfully it was not the case...he found that it
had too much gas....it has ben a year now and it is better thn new
and now he is my mechanic......

              Nick.....

                Re: Aircon cool not cold

Yes too much gas can do this as well, it gets too pressurised & turns off, never getting long enough to work properly....

There was another issue if i remember correctly, the airconditioner relay may be failing. It turns on the compressor & if it cannot pass enough current, the compressor clutch slips. I think Toyota modified this part for this reason. I also think that there is the same relay in the fuse box area for another device (escapes me as to what?) but it can be put into the AC location to see if that is the fault....

Hope you get it sorted, its starting to get warm

                    Re: Aircon cool not cold

in our work trucks we have muchoproblems with the aircon, doing things like that.

is it working when you first start the car? because we have the aircon running all the time, the relay welds on and the aircon runs without the fan and freezes the pipes so no cold air gets through
