  • Speedo Fault

    Hi Guys

Ive got a 2004 TD GXL model
suddenly one day my speedo had become very erratic
Sometmes it will read 0 for the duration of the trip (while the odo still ticks over)
Mostly is reads 20 km over my actual speed (as confirmed by a gps).

it will behave the same way for the whole trip, restarting the car my put it into a 0 or 20 over state

Toyota supposedly looked at it during the recent 70k service but didnt find the problem. I rebooked the car in and they had it 2 days to find this fault an to do some other work. All they could find at the time was a bit of corrosion on a "speed sensor".

When i picked up the car they states that hopefuly it would be ok now, driving home if was faulty right away. Dont they road test these things before claiming its fixed to the customer.

Anybody have any idea as to what the fault could be so i can point toyota in the right direction.... I read the other posts re utilising the abs sensors rather than the good ole read the speed from the gearbox trick which has worked just fine for years....

    Had it .....but no fix

I had the exact same problem on my 2003 GXL Petrol (current shape). It happened in the first few weeks of ownership. First time was when driving on the beach at Fraser. Speedo went up and down whilst speed was constant and then it went off completely. A day later it started working again.

Repeated the same behaviour one more time and then it NEVER DID IT AGAIN.

Weird. Intersted to hear what the problem is.

That's a strange one Mark. Welcome to the forum, BTW.

I wonder is your odo still accurate, or is it wildly out? I thought both systems shared the same sensor, I could be wrong. It's too late tonight, but I can chase it up later in the Factory Manual for you if you like.

Hope you get to the bottom of the problem.

      Drew.

        Thanks Drew

Im still inthe 120s lcool mailing list, but that seems to have lost it steam, i am finding that this is a much better forum these days.

Toyota sent me out a survey after my recent 70k service, i sent it back with an attached letter relating my speedo woes and stating my general unhappiness of their "service". I invited the customer service person to contact me and discuss what they were going to do to resolve my problem. I have heard nothing as yet, one week after sending the letter i followed up by calling said customer service person and got their voice mail. Two days later (today thursday) I have had no contact back.

Mark intermintent faults are the hardest to fix, when the customer drops vehicle off the problem goes away and as soon as you pick it up problems there again. Problem may be in the speedo head unit itself thats a common area these days on alot of different models.
Hope you get it sorted out. Also ring the service manager and complain they are more likely to help you out not the customer relations person.
          Cheers Phil.

            Hi ya Phill

I realise that intermittant faults are a pain (I Work in IT so i know )
The speedo is consistently wrong though, my gripe is that after 2 days in the shop a simple test drive by a technican would have dertermined that its not fixed. I dont care if it takes a week to fix (i can get a lift or take the bus) just dont tell me its fixed when it aint !!

Anyway good news, the customer service person got back to me and we have arranged to take the prado back in tuesday. Perhaps I should take my dodgy workshop manual along with the speedo fault diagnosis page marked ;-)
