  • Rear View Mirror adjustment problem

The LH side rear view mirror on my 120 series GXL will not adjust up and down with the control switch. It will move left and right ok and the RH side mirror will adjust ok both up and down and left to right. Before I take it to a Toyota dealer, has anyone had a similar problem?
Any suggestions on fixing this problem would be appreciated.

    Regards Grant

can you hear the motor running? i.e is the up and down motor dead, or the linke between the motor and the mirror?

No. The motor is not running on the up and down. Are there separate motors for up & down ands left to right?

Yes there will be 2 motors, far too complicated to run 1 motor and then clutches and gears to drive different axis. There should be 4 wires going to the mirror, 2 for up/down (Y) and 2 for left/right (X). Basically there could be 3 problems that could cause the motor not to run, firstly the switch, but if the switch had a fault, I would expect the other mirror to have the same problem. Secondly, if either one of the wires to the Y motor is broken the motor won't drive, and lastly the motor itself could have failed or the gears have seized stopping the motor from turning.

Easiest place to start would be to "Reseat" the connector on the switch (simply unplug and replug it). If no luck then reseat the plug in the door. Failing that you could try removing the other door mirror, and plug it into the connector for the faulty mirror, if that works you know it then the mirror, if it doesn't the it is the wiring to the connector in the door.

        Good Luck

            Hi Matt

I reseated the connector in the switch but no luck. How do I get to the plug in the door and if I need to connect the other door mirror to the faulty mirror how does the mirror come off?

            Cheers Grant

              Hi Grant

I haven't had the "pleasure" of playing with the wing mirrors on the prado, but the cars that I have, have been very similar, so I can only assume the Prado will follow. There is usually a conector just inside the door, probably easier to disconnect by removing the mirror. Usually once the door trim is removed there s a few screws (3 or so) holding the mirror to the door, undo these screws whilst holding the mirror so it doesn't fall. As you pull the mirror away from the door the connector should follow it out of the door.
