you can use the spare key that has no electronic stuff on it to open and start it.. it just cant open the glove box.
I think the spare key does actually have the immobiliser induction chip in it. It doesn't have the remote control, but the remote has nothing to do with the immobiliser, it's a special chip inside the plastic works of the key. There is a coil around your ignition switch that interrogates the key when it is inserted, and from here the signal is sent to the immobiliser unit in the vehicle computer.
This is how I understand it works anyway. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thats great.
They can steal the car, stereo, batteries, winch, UHF, GPS, DVD player.
But they can't get the rubbish I keep in the glovebox.
I feel better now.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

For when you use a Valet at a posh motel or casino to park your car for you.
I didnt use it much at the innaminka pub.
Or the road houses around the outback...

A mate of mine had the same situation with his 05 Prado, Since the car is covered with 60K/3Yr Warrabty the dealer started winging that the key might be exposed to excessive heat (etc.) , Eventually they changed it for free but they need the code listed on a small tag that comes with the original 3 Keys ring (This no is so important I wrote mine on the face of the manual)
Apparently they get blank keys from France and then they swap the transponder in the original keys with the blank space in the blank keys  Very sofisticated indeed . And they need the key-code to reset the wave as per Toyota's software. Same cost here in Dubai (Around 200$ US for the keys) - What a rip-off
Some guys calim they did the same on after market keys at the cost of $50US
A reminder of how much money the dealers are making from us. Just remember the code on your original Keys
I have this situation right at the moment. My key is busted, but held together with tape. This is the second one. First one cracked and fell apart 2 years ago, but the dealer replaced it under warranty.
As we are now out of warranty dealer wants over $300 for a new one.
The transponder unit actually fell out of my key and I had to pick it up off the ground and put it back in. All seems to work OK.
I am now very interested in this blank scenario, and may try it, however this code thingy has me worried, (not from not having access to the code. I stored the little tag with the "valet" key when I got the car), my question relates to how/where would I enter it or do I in fact need to?
The 5 Digit code is only needed when you lose your entire keys and there is no access to the car , it is used to replicate the keys and their signals from Toyta ( I guess that since the digits are only 5 , then there is difnitley someone out-there with a key code like mine -one every 10000)
Do you know the German Car Remotes , The one which actually fold the key inwards , Other mates here in Dubai say that this is more durable than the Stock-Toyota Ones.
My advice is to take a couple of blanks (one standrad and one foldeing-type and replicate you car keys
Chippy - That's a big OUCH! When you are running out of time, you spend what you have to! At least you have saved a bucketload with all you other DIY projects. Have a great trip.
I got the latest (Annual Report etc...) magazine from NRMA today and had a brief look at it. I'm pretty sure I remember reading, or speed reading, that if you have Premium Roadside Assistance they will pay $100 towards the cost of replacing a key. Worth keeping in mind and enquiring about. This is only valid in NSW and ?ACT.
