    Re: My Key broke.

I broke my first key about 15 months ago. After the usual shock at Toyota's price I went searching for an alternative. Mine was broken around the plastic near the base of the blade.

Yes you can buy the blanks on the internet and go through the process of introducing it onto the cars computer but I wasn't that brave.
Northside Locksmiths in Brisbane have blanks on the shelf.
They took my internals and buttons out of the broken key, put them in a blank case that looks indentical to the Toyota key but without the logo. They cut the blade and I paid $75 and off I went.
I don't think the new key is a strong as the Toyota key as I broke it after about 12 months. So I am now on my second one from Northside Locksmiths.
I bought my Prado new in 03 and I have 245,000 on the clock.

On other keys I lost my sons spare key to his Subaru. I had Northside supply a new key and they stuck his key in the computer and cloned the chip info onto the new key and cut the blade to suit. I think I paid about $130.

To go swimming I have a plain metal key from Bunnings $6.50. It opens the door lock and I keep my chipped key dry inside the locked car.

When I go off road I use the service key by its lonesome and keep the chipped key with all the others ie house keys etc in the console. The reason is the jingling jangling drives me nuts and also scratches the steering column etc.

        Re: My Key broke.

I am in the broken key club as well.

I got on ebay and found a bloke that would supply the blank and cut it using the key code and then post the new key to me. It arrived yesterday, i put in the internals from the old key everything works fine. $31.00 well spent (including postage)

I got one of these (Item number: 350255324062) from ebay , took the "chip" out of the brocken one I had and put it in the new one, got it cut at a locksmith, cost me about 22 bucks all up and it works fine. Beats the hell out of paying hundreds for a toyota one.

            Re: My Key broke.

I want to get some new transponder blanks cut then get them reprogrammed.

There are 2 types of transponder keys. 4C or 4D.

Does anyone know what transponder the prado uses? I don't have the grey valet key to tell.

            cheers

              Just an update

Mine is a 2005 April build and it is a 4D transponder. Got the original key tested at a locksmith and bought off ebay.

Got keys cut at locksmith and had keys programmed when I had the car serviced at the dealer. $60 for 2 keys. $11 to cut. Dealer programmed as part of the service. Nice.

                Re: New/replacement keys

Being down to my last key and hearing how much it costs if you lose that one I decided it was time to bite the bullet.

New key from Melville Toyota + cutting + programming = $424. Ouch.

(Again, as others have said, I wish I'd known this figure before purchasing the car, would have bargained a little harder!)

                  Re: New/replacement keys

My key battery is also nearly flat and I have spent some hours trying unsuccessfully to find an exact replacement (panasonic 3v cr 1818). I have now written to the industrial side of panasonic seeking advice from them of a retail outlet and they have acknowledged the email (from a supposed prospective client !! - ah yes for one battery). I do note with some disappointment that the cr 1818 is NOT listed by Panasonic as a current cr product ??, so I hope that they do NOT just refer me to a Toyota dealer (I hate dealers).

I also see that other Prados have different batteries eg 1616, the first two digits refer to the diameter of the battery and therefore getting the right battery might be critical. They are all 3v but vary in diameter (the 20-- series being common) and thickness. I have also found the (for my model) the two button blanks down as low as $15 odd but these are only useful if your module is intact and of course the battery is reasonably good.

I only have a second no button transponder key which cost me whatever to have cut and another $25 to have programmed by a locksmith, (the key cost me about $70 from the dealer). I was warned that the loss of all keys could set me back $3000 for the replacement of the relevant computer ! Yikes.

ps If you are some distance from the vehicle and the key will not work, try putting the metal end of the key on your head when you press the button. You may look like a dork but you will be surprised how far away you can be when it operates !! Don't ask me why it works.

I would be interested in where you get these ?

                        My Key doesent say that.

My Cloned key ( no remote - but can start the car and open doors) cost me $125.

I would buy another remote key in a flash for $80.

I have found a supplier than has the 2 button keys, with all innards, and blank key. He wants about $80.00 each for them. The keys are supposedly original Toyota parts with a PART #: B01SA. The vendor tells me that this part number is on the back of original Toyota keys.

My car is at mechanics today so I dont have my key on me. Can someone have a look at thier keys and confirm the above part number before I send this guy the cash.

Any updates on this solution by Davros?

My wife lost the last remote key, we have the master.

Toyota just quoted me over $500 to get a new remote key!

www.keylessride.com do replacements by the look of it but I am not 100% if they will work!

                            Re: New/replacement keys

Gidday, i have recently purchased a 2nd hand 06 GXL Prado D4D with only one key. I phoned Toyota today about how to go about getting a spare key etc. The story goes like this, Need VIN number / rego and original key, new Blank key with module around about $371, to cut key say $20 and then to program module another $35 so total amount approx $430.00.
Is there any other way to go about this?? I guess if you can find a key from a written off wrecked Prado you may be only up for the key cut and the module program say $55.00 maybe.

Cheers and a happy new year to all.

If your "new" prado was a one owner and you got it from a yard contact the original owner from details in owners manual.
I did when I bought my Prado from a dealer, when a car is bought in by the original owners for trade in on their new one most people only bring in the one key and dealers rarely ask for the others. Most people leave their spare keys in the kitchen drawer and thats where they stay for years after the car has gone.
I managed to get for a simple phone call to the original owner, both the valet key and the other remote key plus a box load of spare parts and accessories that they didn't want to give to the dealer and get nothing in return. My boss at work bought a hail damaged Mercedes and did the same to get the spare key, saving him heaps.
You've got nothing to lose by trying.

                              Regards

                                Re: New/replacement keys

Perhaps someone can answer this poser for me :-

About 5 years ago one half of the shell on my master key cracked so I went to Toyota and they supplied a replacement for around $20. It was a simple job to change everything over but the repair job only lasted a few months. When I found out how much Toyota wanted for a new key I looked around and discovered where Mr Minit could replace the key for around $90 using my remote unit and key shaft. I didn't ask how they were able to programme it as at the time I was just happy not to have to fork out more money to Toyota.

The key lasted until a couple of months ago when the case cracked again. I ended up buying a replacement remote key shell on ebay for $9 and whilst waiting for it to arrive I used the gray key as my 2nd master key has disappeared and is most likely in a storage shed with other household items. When the shell arrived I fitted the remote and took the key to Mr. Minit and the guy cut the blank using my original as a guide. He warned me about the possibility of problems but thought "What the hell it only cost me $9 plus the cut $8."

After reading most of the threads here about replacement keys, locksmiths, programming etc I figured the key wouldn't work. But it does although it's a little bit stiff pushing it into the barrel (I have to turn it over sometimes). Unfortunately I dumped the broken shell before realizing from this site and after reading the owner manual that there is a chip somewhere in the plastic.

Which leads me to the question (at last). Why did the replacement key work? Is the chip in the remote? From the manual I gathered it is supposed to be in the top end of the shell but I tossed it. I made sure the gray key was well away from the vehicle so that it's chip wouldn't activate the immobilizer. If my master key is still my master key then I know I can use it to get a second one.
