Re: 5000k service on diesel prado
I had the 1kz diesel in the 90 series, just sold it with 106k on it, Head went at 103k, $3600 for repairs, oil and filter was changed every 5k and I used Delo oil from caltex (top of the range oil) coolant was done when required, in other words the prado was serviced as per book but extra oil and filter done every 5 and all genuine parts. I used to drain the oil overnight so as to remove as much as possbile and it would still be driping every minute or so after 12 hours. Personally I think the diesel 1kz is a great reliable motor except for the head issues which is very common, but strangely enough dont hear alot about them in the 120 in regards to cracking like the 90's or the hilux's.(might I say also mine never ever towed anything heavy only a box trailer). I found it to be a bit gutless when freeway driving and fuel usage was on par with my old v6 prado, 1kz was around the 10.6 on an average the V6 11.2, if the weather was extremly humid the 1kz used more then the V6 (freeway driving) around town the 1kz was averaging around the mid13's/14 L per 100 the old V6 was 17 but I was running bigger tyres the V6 (75 profile instead of 70). I have now gone to the V6 120 series WOW what a difference in power, quitness, smooth (5 speed auto), love it. I havent checked any fuel consumption yet and to be perfectly honest Im not concerned about it as my mate has one and on general his always used less then my 3.4V6 so any thing less is fine by me, obvioulsy booting it if driven like that will always increase consumption. The airs not as good as my 90 series(cold) but there is a mod with the thermistor I will do which will fix the problem no worrys. You wont find a D4D in your price range unless its a GX with massive klms. I have been searching for 3 weeks just to find a mickey mouse petrol one as most were either trashed no books, no servicing history or they were above what I wanted to spend.Would have loved a VX petrol but no where near as common as a GXL or Grande. Also point of warning if looking at a grande check the sunroof for rust, extremely common, every Grande I looked at were one owners never been smashed painted etc not near salt water and every one of them had rust in the sunnroof under the rubber, check the seal at the front of the sunroof on the glass panel and just pull the seal back a tad and rust flakes were dropping out everywhere when I had the sunroofs half open, I stopped looking at grandes, loved the interior, dual air, traction control, down hill control but didnt want the hassles. I ended up with an 05 GXL with 80k on it like new for under $33k and that was from a yard,they had 36k on it, dont be afraid to try and screw them down as much as possible thay want a sale a good GXL D4D with low klms will cost you another 10k easily. If I had the $$$ I would have gone the D4D but didnt want to borrow $$$ they are a totally different vehicle to drive with the D4D compared to the 1KZ, there is a member on here who has the 120 1kz (wont mention names) and has chipped it, exhaust etc and reckons he wasted his $$$ doing it. He averages around 15L per 100 around town, He might read this and comment himself about it but will leave that to him if he decides to. Drive them and see for yourself, drive the D4D and the petrol then jump in the 1KZ znd you will notice a massive difference. I think personlly (and just my opinion) the 120 is to heavy for the 1kz, Good luck finding a good one there are some buckets out there but patience will find you a good one. If you can find a late 06 onwards with the duel air it would be a bones especially if you have kids up the back in the dickie seats on a hot day. Regards Steve
