  • Attaching rod to factory roof rail possible?

    Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has seen a bracket that would allow a rod tube (55mm) to be attached directly to the factory roof rails? Don't really want to end up fitting crossbars or a rack if I can help it.

    Ta

If you are handy with tools and can make up a channel nut that can fit into the slot in the roof rail, then you can make up any bracket to suit.

Thanks Andrew! Had thought of grinding a unistrut nut down to suit but wasn't sure if the singular roof rail had enough strength to hold a lightweight bracket and rod holder over heavy corrugations?

It'll be fine as long as it is the original roof rail and not the plastic ebay jobbie you'll need the M6 size as the other larger ones (M8, M10) are too thick.

Sorry, M8 channel nuts can fit in the slot but you would have to grind off too much.

Actually if you don't want to do any grinding, remove the roof rails from the Prado. Undo one end of the feet so that you can slide a few M8 channel nuts in there and put everything back. Then just get a short screw and torque up any unused channel nuts. Then it won't rattle in the slot.
