  • DIY Drawer System Build with Photos

After my recent Holland Track trip I realised that I needed to have a better storage solution than space cases and roof bars.

So a drawer system would seem the perfect way to carry all those essential items around and make them easily accessible.

Having made a few phone call it was quickly apparent that even at the cheaper end of the market I would be looking at a couple of grand $$$$ to get what I wanted.....Solution Build my own.

I worked out what size I wanted to make the drawers and draw up some plans then off to bunnings for some raw materials.

I went online and found an Hardware supplier for the Drawer Sliders and other hardware, locks and flush mount tie downs, etc and up to now the cost is under $400.....I anticipate the total cost complete will be under $500.

    BOM:
    3 x 2400 x 1200 x 15 mm structural ply wood
    1 outdoor wood glue
    2 " wood screws
    4 x 913mm 125kg drawers slides
2 x flush mount locking latches
4 x rated flush mount tie downs

    Items still to buy:
    Carpet to cover
    spray Adhesive
Black spray paint to paint the visible areas outside.

I only ordered the hardware on Monday ss still awaiting its arrival here are some photos of the build to date and I will post more as the build progresses.

    Mike

            New Cargo Drawers

Excellent work so far. I'm just about to start mine which will be same configuration as yours. Wondering what the overall depth is. I was thinking of going 300mm to accomodate my Waeco RAPS battery and gas bottle laying on its side (height wise). Also what's the length of your carcass?

            Cheers

            Jeff

Jeff, I wouldn't lay a gas bottle on its side...

The carcass is 1050 wide by 950 long by 310 high.

The drawer depth is 265 x 915 long by 465 wide

with the wing infills my fridge will go on top and a space case for the camping gear.

just waiting for the drawer slide to arrive and then it will fly together.

                    Mildew,

What sort or gas bottle are you putting in there?

You've got to be carefull putting them inside cars.
                    Geoff

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

I've taken on board the comments about the gas bottle and decided to carry it in my caravan boot (upright).

                        Thanks for the comments.

A 9kg gas bottle fits perfectly in a standard Milk Crate. It's easier to tie this down to racks or in a trailer etc this way. Just an idea though.

                          Draws look good.

More Pictures now I have the drawer sliders.

I have also ordered the MSA Platinum drop down slide for my fridge. should make accessing everything much easier.
