This would also stop the door from flying open and busting the hinges.
This is the main reason I would take off the standard locking arm, and fit a gas strut.
Some thing to cushion the opening, so the bottom welded seam doesn't start to break open,

It seems as though none of our Sydney PP'ers are able to loan their rig for research. Would it not be possible to go to a supplier of gas struts and get one that is the correct length? I'm sure that they would be able to supply a couple of brackets as well. With the collective knowledge of PP, it wouldn't be too hard to make this work.
I for one am over the door swinging open and putting extra stress on the hinges.04 GXL - Red Centa dual battery, Alloy B/bar, BFG AT's, Rhino Rack commercial bars x 3, GME TX3540, TJM roof cage, Outback Ideas recovery points, LHS rear drawer, 2" Dobinsons/Bilstein lift, ARB CKMA12 air compressor, CoilRite airbags, ARB 2.5m awning, MCC Dual Wheel Carrier, Eagle Eye headlights with 55w hid lo beam.

I havent measured the gap but the current arm is fairly flat. I would suspect that a strut would be too big to fit.
I am currently looking for a supplier for gas struts (for another project), when I find one I might make some enquiries and take some measurments.

Would the gas strut you're after be for the upcoming rear wheel carrier???04 GXL - Red Centa dual battery, Alloy B/bar, BFG AT's, Rhino Rack commercial bars x 3, GME TX3540, TJM roof cage, Outback Ideas recovery points, LHS rear drawer, 2" Dobinsons/Bilstein lift, ARB CKMA12 air compressor, CoilRite airbags, ARB 2.5m awning, MCC Dual Wheel Carrier, Eagle Eye headlights with 55w hid lo beam.

Had a bit of a measure up yesterday for a strut, from what i could see it needs to be 600mm centre to centre in length to allow the door to open fully. I have a bag of the ball ends that the strut clips on to and they just happen to screw straight into the mount points for the original arm, have to make a slight mod to the one on the body to allow ball to go down far enough. Problem will be, as i see it, getting a strut in the correct length that is strong enough to do the job. If time permits tomorrow i am going to go to the local gas strut supplier and get the strongest one he has and give it a go.Will post up my findings, fingers crossed it is as easy as it seems.

I like this idea
It would be great to be able to lock the strut in any postion in travel between fully shut and opened so you dont have to hold it when you have a small amount clearance and cant open the door up much.White 2003 V6 GXL, 4spd auto, Vapor injected LPG, Autocraft Prem Billstein 2inch lift with poly air-bags

OK so i went to the strut supplier today. Have it fitted to door and does work, however, i came away from there with the weakest(100nm) strut they had at 585mm open length and even this pushes the door open when on level ground. Does nothing to dampen the opening force at all. The actual fitment of the strut was dead easy and went as follows
1 - unbolt original arm from body and door(3 x 12mm bolts) and remove
2 - The mount point on the body needs approx 5mm removed from height(down to the top of the thread) or the strut hits on the door when closing.
3 - Screw balls in to the hole on the body and the mount point furthest away from the hinges on the door.
4 - Clip on strut.
There is some movement in the mount on the door so i am going to make a flat plate tomorrow that utilises both bolt holes on the door to try and remove this flex. I am also going to talk to a strut regas guy to see if the actual strut can be modified to provide some cushion at the end of its stroke when opening to achieve what we are after. Would be good to be able to get a bit less force when opening and a bit more force when closing(to hold door open better) but not sure if this is possible.
The strut i bought came from a company called Ovesco, who are based on the Gold Coast and do mail order through their web site. The strut was a 585 100(length/strength) and comes with the balls required for fitting and cost $25.70.
Hopefully if i have done it right there will be a couple of photos above as proof i have a least made a start. Will post ant further info as i get it.
