as a newbie to the forum, the idea looks awesome.
Just wondering why the fridge is on the left in some cases, given my underrated connection(factory) is on the right side GXL 03?

Anyway, just how easy could this assembly be removed when not travelling or on a weekend away, the reason with three kids the rear seats are a huge bonus

Very eagerly awaiting more news Baggs71 on your venture
Bitumen is boring, at least it can get you to the next off road adventure

Because the door opens to the right, and most fridges are on slides, LHS makes access easier.

The home made version I have is easily removed, when I need to (we also use the rear seats during week etc.) and I would think that the finished design could probably allow for this

Something else I should have mentioned - the OEM 12v socket in the rear on the right really shouldn't be used for a fridge in any case. The factory wiring isn't heavy enough, and you could risk fridge damage or worse to your vehicle. Generally, if you want a fridge in the back of the vehicle, you should run a dedicated set of wiring from the battery to the fridge. This also helps to keep the fridge on the left of the vehicle, as you can mount the 12v socket anywhere you want in there.

Feedback from a 60L Engel Owner

Hi there - watching this with a lot of interest.

I own a 60L Engel and personally i think that putting a fridge of this size in the middle would be a really inefficient use of space. IMO - keep it on the left side - this also serves the role of being able to provide better ventilation. That way you can have a solid two drawer unit in the remaining space on the right and probably even engineer it so that the base and fridge sections can remain in the car, while the drawers can be removed during town duties so the dog can still be thrown in the boot.

The Engel doesn't have it's own fan - how about cutting 10mm ventilation slots in the end of the panel that would be on top of the fridge ventilation section? You could also put them in the side and front panel to allow for adequate airflow all the way around the fridge ventilation area.. (BTW - the other advantage of keeping the engel on the side is i can angle my rear aircon vent down to blow over the fridge air intakes).

              baggs71 mate!

We too will be watching this thread with interest. Although at present we are a little different with our rig being our everyday vehicle too and therefore if the drawers stay in need a relative flat space for a stroller at present. Would be really interested in catching up to discuss the custom option whether this becomes more than just this thread.

Hubby has made a set of drawers but will have to remake as they were just a... first run and unfinished anyway, but did the trick for the 2012GTG. Time is always hard to come by here for the WOZCLEAN Clan so getting someone to cut out a custom set of drawers would be ideal and something this Finance Minister would most likely approve.

              Cheers and KABSOB!

Hi guys im writing all this down....engels having no fans was a new one to me and interesting none the less.
ive not been on a great deal of late due to the drawers and other matters....but I am slowly getting it done...once we've worked out the wrinkles ill post the build thread a step at a time...then we (the chosen ones) will test it....if the testing is fantastic then ill post a new for sale thread for a 2 drawers model....ill keep this whole adventure dead simple and a grass level...
if your worried im heading in the wrong direction at anytime or have the exact measurements you need for your non fan cooled engel....then send those details to the below email so I can accumulate all data needed to cater to the majority in a 2 drawer set up....
                regards

                  Bugger this is sloooooooow....
We have now got the cadcam half done
Ill post some 3d images of proposed designs
Weve tested screws and mini cam locks like ikea etc and both when siliconed are near bullet proof
We are working out a way and think we have found it....of adding extra drawers etc or removing them within a couple minutes via external cam locks or bolt/wingnuts recessed into the paneling.
This product was released just on 12 months ago and is super light and strong.
Early next week my drawers (full height for tourering) are being laser cut....

                    drawers

thanks for the feedback on the fridge location and 12v outlet socket. Awaiting some funds before i proceed with the second battery and wiring. Although the Thumper 60AH looked very interesting, however taking space out of the back area is not ideal, given space is such a priority

looking forward to seeing those 3D images

                      Another keen observer here.

I have held of purchasing commercially made products because of the need to be able to take them in and out quite easily.
They are only required for the 2-3 trips a year.

I had previously made some form my GQ patrol using square aluminium tubing and plastic joiners. This worked really well, and I did covert it to fit into the prado as well. However it is a bit clunky to take in and out. For trips this year I haven't used it, but that left things to bounce around too much in the back.

                      My needs are:
                      - Easy to install and remove (max 15 mins job) and therefore allowing for 3rd row seats to be used again.
                      - Shelf, draw or space big enough to hold a second battery

Really like the concept of being able to add more drawers in future. or to change configuration based on trip type.

                      Keep us posted. thanks.

One thing to think about is incorporating is a water carrying system in the triangle shaped area between the back of the drawers and the back seats.
One of those bladder systems could fit perfectly in there and then just either have the tube run under the 'winged' area on the left hand side, or via the rear passenger door.

                          Just a thought?
