Re: D.I.Y camp/rear door table

Thought I would post my own lighting solution for the trek table......

A 60 LED rechargable light.
Pluged into a 12v socket in the rear.
Held on with 2 clips I bought at the local marine store.
Means I have light on the table at night (hands free), it charges all the time, and is detachable if necessary.

Works well.

Re: D.I.Y camp/rear door table

Hopefully be building one of these little beauties up over the next few weeks but I was wondering if there has been any issues with the hinges pulling out? I've pulled the trim panel off before and from memory this is very thin so have you guys been attaching a piece of timber behind to give the screws something to sink into or is there around enough meat in the trim panel?

Schaffer,

I simply screwed mine straight in. I assume it went into the sheet metal of the door just behind the plastic trim.
I have used it a fair bit and not had a problem.

Good luck with it.

Cheers

Hey Schaffer

You will need to reinforce the plastic. I used some thin metal stripping from Bunnings.

I mounted the support straps directly to the steel at the top.

Will look to see if I have any pics.

Re: D.I.Y camp/rear door table

So you did the latch straps up the top with a tech screw straight into the door panel and then applied the trim over the top. Nice and clean. I do like that

Bankrupt,
I quite like your idea too of securing the straps underneath the cover. I also liked your idea of having a couple of stretchy straps on the rear door hidden out of the way. They'll come in very handy.
Mate, can you give us a close up shot of the light you've mounted on the top of the rear door too please? If not too much, where you got it and how many $$$ you splurged on it?

Re: D.I.Y camp/rear door table

After seeing all the great efforts done on the tables i thought it would be time to do my own. So here it is.

Or are the joins visible on the top of the table?

Can you please let us know the secret of fitting the carpet? :?: :P
I don't know about the rest but i glued one of the large flat sides first (let it rest with some weight on it for 24hrs) then glued both the top and bottom straight sections and let that sit for 24hrs all out of the same piece of carpet. I then glued the other large flat side in place and finished it off by gluing a couple of small strips down the left and right sides. You can see in the photos when the table is down theres a white/grey outline between the hinges, this goes around the whole table and is where the second large flat piece of carpet was glued in and the sides trimmed up to be flush. (You can barely notice it and is only when the table is down)

I just drilled a pilot hole through the trim and into the door (making sure i didn't go through any wiring that might be there) and secured the screw straight into the metal of the door.

After reading through the last few posts I guess the next job will be throwing in one of those lamps above the table. What a top idea! The mods never end.

I am looking to do a rear shelf as well... Spoke to a mate and he advised me that if you can not get the shelf down when teh door is shut... Then you MUST be able to get to the door release...

OHHHH I see lots of pics of units that could be a trap in the event of an accident

Any way... Mine is going in and will not be so high... Or I will leave a cut out to allow access to teh door handle..

Probably not correct information as those of us with cargo barriers can not get to the rear anyway.....

Hey guys

This is my knock up - decided not to carpet the top (other side is) as its so much easier to wipe clean.

Its a good simple mod, cheap an easy to do, and you will be surprised how often you will use it.

http://

Also have the rear barrier so opening the back door from inside is not an issue.

Yea.. If ya have a barrier and or no rear seating etc... I am assuming not an issue...

But if ya have persons back there it could be an issue.. That is unless you also acting as a paddy wagon... Cargo barrier and they can not get out.. Sounds like a great place for the kids :-)

AS I do not have a barrier... I will be looking to add a access cutout to teh door handle.. Just got to work out the best way..

I could make it such that the cut out also become a cup holder..

I actually got into the back and shut the door whilst i had the cargo barrier in to check the fit and wether the table would open or not. The table would open and i could get to the door handle......but someone had put the child lock on previously! Lucky the wife was there to let me out or it would have been tough getting the cargo barrier out whilst i was still locked in the back. ops: or i might have had to use the window hammer conveniently located on the cargo barrier!

My cargo barrier clearly states that no person should be seated in the back whilst the cargo barrier is in place...but i hear what your saying.
