  • Which Locker? Air or otherwise?

Hi all, I know this isn't an introductions area but I'll just let you know who I am:

Names Phil Taylor, currently studying Scientific Photography at RMIT Uni in Melbourne.

Soon buying a 120 V6 Prado 03/04 model hopefully less than 150K on the clock for $25-30K.

    Mods to be done immediately:
    1st mod: injected Gas.
    2nd mod: 2" or 3" lift
and if wife can be convinced..
    3rd mod: Locker(s).

My question: what type of lockers do you have? ARB or otherwise?
And why did you choose them, can you justify the cost?

I'd love airlockers ARB or TJM, but if auto lockers aren't a problem Id be just as happy with them and the wife/backpocket would be too.

For those who have detroit etc, do you feel much "kick" when going into, coming out of corners? Has it worried you?

For those with airlockers, is it a lot cheaper getting both done at once, and if not which did you get first?

By the way, I've never had lockers before.

    Previously owned (other than 2wd's):
    FJ40 shorty
    BJ73 midwheelbase
Currently 3dr 2000 Rav4 (with 2 kids, we've definately outgrown this - but believe it or not it's got us up some great tracks).

Setting up as daily runaround and touring.

    Cheers, Phil.

I hope I've posted this in the right spot, if not feel free to move it mod!
    Cheers - Phil Taylor

I have an auto locker in the front of the Mav (lock-right http://www.richmondgear.com/powertrax/lockright.html) and love it. However, as the Prado is constant 4WD you would have to make it 2WD otherwise with an auto locker in the front it would always be locked. Therefore the only real choice is the ARB air locker.

As MAV suggests the only real option for the constant 4WD Prado is air lockers.
There is no significant cost advantage in getting both at once. If getting just one locker, do the rear first - Toyota LSDs are crap and the Prado rear diff is fragile, a locker in the rear will lessen the chance of breaking the rear diff.

Thanks everyone. I'd read a bit from a few threads here on the diff club! One excuse to convince the wife!!

Would anyone just be happy with one locker? i.e. would it be silly for me to just get an auto locker in the back?

I seem to be the only one around here that has had a Detroit in a constant 4wd before (I put a couple of replies in the 2nd thread listed earlier). I like them over the manual locks because they are effectively locked unless there is enough traction to unlock it. So you don't have the worry of leaving a manual locker locked too long and potentially breaking something.

With the auto-locker on sealed surfaces you need to make sure that the rolling diameters of the tyres on the locker axle are the same otherwise you can sometimes feel the axle squirm on the suspension bushes if accelerating hard in a straight line. With the Prado centre diff having a torque bias to the rear it may be a bit more noticable. I would have fitted one to my Prado and reported if that was the case but I am just about to change over to the other 4wd that begins with a P so I can't answer that.

I consider it my midlife crisis  and am getting a 2 door Pajero to see if that helps. I would have liked a 2 door Prado but that isn't happening in Australia.

The Pajero has the OEM Rear diff lock option fitted so it will be interesting to see how it goes.

                Prado Lockers

For what its worth I have front and rear ARB air lockers in our 1997 LC Prado(V6 Petrol Manual Trans)

The rear locker went in first and boy did that make a BIG difference! The front locker is great but doesn't give the same bang for the $. The great advantage of lockers is being able to keep the speed down whilst mainting maximum traction. It is all about control not aggession. Make it not break it?

The front locker comes into play in really difficult terrain where you need to pull the front of the vehicle through when the rear has lost traction in mud or on shale. I would definately put in a rear locker agian but maybe think twice about the front one. You can go a long long way on a rear locker. Always do the rear first.

                Cheers
