Anyone made one before :?: :?:

    Cheers,
Haven't made one but you are on the money as my toyota service guy did mention this one to me in the early days as he knew i did a bit of sand driving and he mentioned keeping this one clean.

Interesting topic Matt. I have only ever had one alternator die on me and it happened without me noticing it until the battery gave out right when I entered the old toll booths on what is now the F3 at the Sydney end near Hornsby. In those days the traffic used to bank up for miles down the tollway on a Sunday afternoon and to have a car stop dead in one of the toll booths was extremely annoying.

When you come up with a solution be sure to post it up.

I use to have a cover on a crusier, it was basically looked like a large rubber glove with the tips of the fingers cut off to allow the wiring in. This was the same model with the wading plugs in the gear timing case and gearbox that you were supposed to fit for each water crossing.

The alternator cover was to be fitted when you expected to drive in muck, you reversed the glove thing over the alternator and it had a pull tab to partially seal the front. It came very close and often touched the pulley.

The problems were it never really sealled the front (alt fan blades suck the air in), there was often more build up muck in the clean side of the cover and it could not be used due to over heating if you had a heavy load on your alternator, i.e. winching, running fridge, low speed HI beam+ Spotty driving.

The auto sparky that fitted it was in two minds as to its worth as the diodes prematurely wore out due to heat stress.

Maybe if you could make a spash guard located under the unit and out of the way of all the belts and that is strong enough to withstand volume water hits (i.e river crossings) without bending back into the unit maybe the best option ?

In the end I gave up worrying, if you can get the alt out and get it to a auto-sparky they rebuild/exchange them for about $150-200ish.

The alternator probably needs some air to breathe and keep it's cool. Be carefull how you enclose it.
Having said that, the idea of keeping the crap out is a good one if you can do it that way.

It seems odd that it is mounted so low in the engine bay, i would have thought the air conditioning compressor could have been mounted lower then allowing the alternator a higher mounting.

For 99% of the Prado's on the road the position is quite acceptable.
its just us who actually get out there that find this is a problem.

I remember the splash guard on the dizzy cap on my old mini.... maybe something similar??

It can really only be a splash gaurd, cause you would have to make it 100% water tight to cope with in water use, like deeper water crossings.

Interested to see what you come up with...

pity this was sorted out sooner, as steve today on our morisset trip,
did his alternator on his 90's V6.
2hrs from home and only a N50 battery.
i thing the reason the AC compressor is low,
is that alot are dealer fitted, so toyota need to make the fitting of this easy.
i think a splash guard would be good, but the mounting part will be the painfull part

Just an idea? some of the trucks have a turbo sheild which is a light weight heat resistant fibre resin (?) maybe a bastardised fit may save time. most of the one I've seen have that curved shape ?

From memory there was one on the 200tdi landrover defender/discovery engines from about the mid 90s (ish). Probably need to check with a landrover nut for specifics. There is a 4by wreckers at kotara may have them?
