  • Custom Shovel Holder

Well I got a little bored at home last night and having a few bundies when I came up with a idea to mount a shovel on the spare wheel mount. 1st I found a piece of 25mm square tube about 14cm long , 1 bolt with 2 nuts and washers and a 5mm plate and a piece of angle.about 14cm long and then welded a nut inside the tube. There is a hole centre of the rim holder which I put the bolt and washers through

Then I welded the nut inside of the tube ( after squashing the tube a fraction so the nut was a tight fit) 1st I wound the tube on and tightened and then marked which way was vertical and then I cut a V shape in the square tube approx 4cm deep and welded the angle ( Or bird Sh#T welded so a workmate stated I’m just learning to use the welder) . From there I glued a old bit of rubber inside to protect my expensive garden spade shovel. Place shovel inside angle and use a U bolt to hold in place and make sure the shovel is hard against the tyre to stop vibration and cracking if the weld. I'm sure someone will come up with a better idea But for now this will do me.

How good is that. Cheap (except forthe Bundy's  ) simple and effective.

Well I am impressed with it, and cheap well all the steel was scraps from the garage floor and a 6 pack of bundy and all was well. I have tied it to the rim as it may work loose on bumpy roads/tracks. I will probably weld another bracket on it so I can padlock the expensive shovel to the wheel so none steals it. At least it will be easy to access as it is normally in the back under all the camping gear.

          Re: Custom Shovel Holder

I luv this mod. Its simple and serves a purpose. I can't believe how easy it looks to make.
I've only just been looking at putting my shovel up on the Roof Bars. This could well be a better option.
          Great stuff.

            Re: Custom Shovel Holder

Well i am surprised no one else came up with the idea before, I just hope that the bloody shovel doesn 't fall off and drag behind the prado after a few bump roads ops: . I have tied some string/rope around the handle and through the rim in case the weld fails  . If anyone comes up with some improvements ( Even though it it perfect already  ) Please post them. It's amzing what a few cans of bundy and a bit of imagination can do  . I will have a few over the weekend at Tuff Trucks so who knows what my next project will be.

              Re: Custom Shovel Holder

In the event of a flat tyre, can you remove the spare without having to remove the bracket? (Obviously the shovel needs to come off).

In case you don't wan't to make one yourself:
                http://www.4x4equip.com.au/listProduct/ ... vel+Holder

If you want to hold just the shovel, you can use the bangie strap to strap the shovel to the wheel using a wheel spikes.

                  Re: Custom Shovel Holder

I brought a highlift jack mount from tigerz11 $99 (tiger winch supplier), had to do minor mod see photo, but it holds the shovel very nicely. added bonus it also packs out the spare wheel so larger tyre can fit.

Just need to work out how to fit the toyota plastic tyre cover as well. hmmm

seems the board attachment quota is reach so can't upload the photos, but they are very professional

                    Re: Custom Shovel Holder

So how does a hi lift go mounted on the rear wheel ?
I would have thought it would be a little heavy to be mounted there.

Hang on, I think you're saying that you used a hi-lift mounting bracket but are only carrying a shovel on it ?
                    Cheers, Wayne

I had a crack at it today, same but different. Couple mistakes but it does the job.

what does this mean? i was trying to upload my build?

Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached

                        Re: Custom Shovel Holder

Mine is still going strong, and we never forget the shovel now when we go away as its left on the back all the time. I thought it might go walkies but hasn't ( AS YET). I think the problem you are having with photo's is there is a limit for each section  .

Search for how to post pictures. You have to use an external place that holds your pictures like photobucket and link them in. It works well once you have your photos set up.

                            Re: Custom Shovel Holder

Hi 2003GXL, Yes yours is a very simple idea. I'm carrying a shot handled shovel and a axe. I decided to mount mine using two 8mm bolts through the two smaller holes. I welded the nuts on the back of the tyre carrier. If i need to change the spare i just remove the shovel and axe and tyre will slide over the shovel carrier. Does yours come loose at all being held on by only the one bolt?
                            Cheers
