  • Air Locker help PLEASE.

G'day I hope someone can help me with this

Just got back from a 3 hour drive and noticed gear oil dripping from under the car.

Had a look underneath and it seems to be some sorta valve on the chassis for the rear air locker. So I went over it with a rag and tightened all the bolts.

Whacked the compressor on and engaged the rear locker, there was oil and air coming out of the black hose, bubbling out under pressure. Anyone have any idea what is wrong?

Any help would be great appreciated.

    Regards,

    Tom.

    Re: Air Locker help PLEASE.

Take it back to ARB (I'm assuming it's ARB as this is common for their locker) O rings in the locker may need replacing if it's a lot of oil. Minor misting is considered "Normal" by ARB.

As a place to start, I think your diff breather may be blocked causing a pressure build up, forcing diff oil into the diff locks airline.

        Re: Air Locker help PLEASE.

        G'day fellers,

I have been told by a few people now that the o-rings could be stuffed.

ARB is a long way from where I am, and its bloody hard to get there during business hours :x

I will check the breather, can ya blow them out with a compressor?

        Thanks again

It's unlikely to be the fault as the O rings still need to be faulty for the oil to get past.

The breather is actually a check valve and offers quite a bit of resistance when you try and blow though it.(just so you know what to expect if you check it)

            Ahh good point mate.

Anyone ever done the o-rings? If so, whats involved/

Anyone ever had them done at ARB? If so, what did it cost you?

            Thanks again

You need a reasonable amount of mechanical ability, but it's not beyond most DIY mechanics. You can get a seal kit from ARB. If you source the O rings locally then make sure they are made of Viton (They should be brown in colour)

Here is a write up taking you through the job step by step. It's for a Jeep Dana axle but the proceedure is basically the same. Obviously on a Prado you have to drop the tail shaft to take the diff out of the pumpkin.
